Bollywood & Fusion on Sitar and Zitar
Learn to adapt your favorite Bollywood hits and explore creative fusion melodies for both the acoustic sitar and the electric zitar.
Here is my sitar cover of the song 'Pehle Bhi Main' from the movie Animal. This is a perfect example of how a contemporary hit can be beautifully reinterpreted on a classical instrument.
Playing my rendition of 'Vida Karo' on the sitar in a peaceful outdoor setting. The song's melody translates so well to the sitar's expressive strings.
A tribute to the maestro Niladri Kumar, playing a piece that blends the melodies of 'Mehram' and 'Fragile'. This clip shows the versatility of switching between the acoustic sitar and electric zitar to fit different moods.
Here is my take on the beautiful Zitar solo from the song 'Dil ka kya'. This is a great example of how the electric zitar can bring a modern, soulful voice to popular Bollywood melodies.
A late night jam session with my electric zitar and a backing track. This is how I experiment with new sounds and ideas, which is something I encourage all my fusion students to do.
About this collection
The key to playing Bollywood on a sitar is understanding which instrument fits the mood. For soulful ballads, we use the acoustic sitar to capture natural resonance and those micro-tones we call 'meend'. If you want to play a modern, upbeat fusion track, we switch to the Zitar. I teach you how to use effects processing on the electric sitar to match the punch of a studio recording, something you won't get on a traditional acoustic instrument.
Bridging Tradition and Modernity
Many students come to me wanting to play the latest Bollywood hits, but they aren't sure how to start. My approach blends my formal PhD training with the practical needs of a contemporary session musician. You don't have to choose between classical and modern; you can master both.
The Acoustic vs. Zitar Choice
We start by picking the right tool for your specific sound:
- Acoustic Sitar: This is where we focus on depth, emotion, and technical control. If you love the sound of 'Vida Karo' or traditional soulful melodies, this is your home.
- Electric Zitar: This is for the experimenters. I teach you how to treat the Zitar like a lead guitar, incorporating effects like delay and reverb. It is perfect for jamming with bands or covering high-energy Bollywood songs.
My Teaching Process
Whether you are a beginner or already have some experience, we don't just memorize scales. We work on:
- Transposition: How to map complex Bollywood vocal melodies onto your strings.
- Technique: Mastering the specific 'Jhala' and 'Meend' required for Indian classical music, which translates directly into professional Bollywood session work.
- Fusion Essentials: Learning to jam with backing tracks and other instruments like the tabla, guitar, or drums.
Kya baat hai, the best part about this journey is that a strong classical foundation makes every other style of music easier to grasp. If you have the enthusiasm, we will find your unique sound together.
Hardik Verma
I'm Hardik. I grew up in Varanasi with the sounds of Indian classical music, but my life in Mumbai taught me to embrace the electric energy of fusion. I teach because I love seeing students bridge that gap, taking a simple Raag and turning it into something entirely new.
