About Stage & Studio Performances
You will see how our classroom techniques, specifically layakari (rhythmic play) and abhinaya (expression), translate into the performance pieces featured here. These are not just memorized sequences; they are the result of the rigorous riyaz (practice) we prioritize in our studio, proving that the real work happens long before the stage lights go up.
Every performance on this page—whether a spontaneous Tarana in the studio or a polished production at our annual 'Nritya-Chanda' showcase—is rooted in the Jaipur Gharana tradition. My goal in sharing these clips is to demystify the performance process for my students. When you see a group moving in perfect synchronization, you are seeing the result of months of repetitive drills, focus on taal (rhythm), and dedication to form correction.
The Art of Performance
- Technical Precision: Notice the focus on tatkaar (footwork) and speed progressions. We do not just perform; we recite bols (syllables) and execute intricate rhythmic patterns that are the hallmark of our lineage.
- Abhinaya & Expression: It is never just about the steps. Whether it is a Thumri or a Bhajan, the storytelling aspect is what connects the dancer to the audience. This is where we bridge the gap between technical execution and emotional depth.
- Collaborative Energy: Kathak thrives on the interplay between the dancer and live musicians. You will see this dynamic in our performance highlights, where the sound of the ghungroos becomes a conversation with the music.
Whether you are watching to find inspiration for your own training or looking for choreography for an upcoming event, these clips represent the discipline and sheer joy that we bring to every session. If you are a student, look at how the bandishes we learn in class are applied here. If you are an audience member, I hope you find the same beauty in the rhythm that we find every time we strap on our ghungroos.
Eshani Sathe
I'm Eshani, and for me, Kathak is a lifelong *sadhana*. My mother and Guru, Smt. Radhika Sathe, taught me that dance is about finding your own voice—whether that's on a big stage or in the quiet of a studio. I carry that legacy forward, sharing the same rigor and joy with my students every single day.
