Large-Scale Public Murals and Street Art
I transform expansive public and private exteriors into landmark art pieces. By using dynamic 3D illusions and cultural narratives, I turn architecture into an immersive visual experience.
This video showcases a variety of my large-scale street art projects in Mumbai and Bhubaneswar. It includes a 50-foot high building mural, an octopus wrapping a structure, dynamic sports figures, and a 3D illusion of trucks, demonstrating my versatility in public art.
This footage provides a behind-the-scenes look at the execution of a massive sports mural. It shows the extensive bamboo scaffolding and the collaborative effort of my team, which are essential for completing such ambitious, multi-story projects safely and efficiently.
As part of the 'Kala Kumbh' workshop for Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, I contributed to a 750-meter scroll depicting unsung heroes of India's independence struggle. This video shows segments of the monumental work, including historical portraits and dramatic scenes like naval battles.
This mural in Bhubaneswar, part of the 'Skilled in Odisha' initiative, honors Munni Tigga, the state's first female loco pilot. The piece combines a realistic portrait with graphic elements like the train and typography to create an inspiring public message.
About Large-Scale Public Murals
When scaling art to 50 feet, the technique requires more than just brushwork. For these projects, I coordinate with a trusted team of artists, utilizing specialized bamboo scaffolding to ensure safety and precision. We focus on structural integrity and visibility, ensuring that the mural is not only impactful up close but retains its depth and perspective when viewed from the street level.
Scaling art for public spaces demands a different approach than studio canvas work. Public murals operate within the architecture of a city, interacting with sunlight, passersby, and the existing urban texture. My process begins with an analysis of the wall's history and its role in the environment. For projects like the 750-meter 'Kala Kumbh' scroll or large city landmarks, I prioritize durability. I use professional-grade acrylics that resist weathering and UV damage, ensuring the work remains vibrant over time. The technical challenge lies in maintaining anatomical proportions and 3D perspective across uneven surfaces. Whether I am creating an optical illusion of trucks emerging from a wall or a portrait that honors local figures like Munni Tigga, the goal is to bridge the gap between the viewer and the space. I manage logistics for large-scale production, including site assessment, surface preparation, and managing a team of artists to adhere to strict deadlines. If you are commissioning a mural for a campus, public building, or corporate exterior, the first step is reviewing the wall structure to determine the right paint medium and the necessary scaffolding requirements.
Pratap Badtya
I approach every wall as a canvas waiting for a narrative, drawing from my training at Sir J.J. School of Art to blend contemporary technique with ancestral memory. My work is not just about decoration; it is about grounding the subconscious struggles of our daily lives into tangible, large-scale art.
