The Grind: Cricket Fitness & Conditioning
Cricket is played with the body first. We build speed, strength, and stamina from the ground up to create athletes who can last the distance.
"Step uthao jara, speed badhao abhi!" Our coaches push players during running drills at the Varroc Vengsarkar cricket academy. These off-season workouts are crucial for building the explosive speed and endurance needed on the field.
Strength training is a non-negotiable part of our regimen. Here, a player performs deadlifts under supervision at our indoor facility, building the core power essential for batting and bowling.
Correct form and controlled repetitions are key. Two of our trainees work on their deadlifts, focusing on building functional strength that translates directly to improved performance in a match.
Agility and flexibility are just as important as raw strength. This video shows our players going through dynamic stretching exercises to improve their range of motion and prevent injuries.
Every session concludes with a proper cool-down. Our players perform lunges and other stretches to help their muscles recover, ensuring they are ready for the next day's grind.
Power Yoga is one of our secret weapons for building mental and physical endurance. This session at our Pune facility shows our U-19 and U-23 squads performing Suryanamaskars in perfect sync.
A closer look at a Power Yoga session in progress. A coach provides hands-on correction to ensure a young player maintains the correct posture during a Suryanamaskar, maximizing the benefits of the exercise.
The entire squad moves together during a Power Yoga session. This group discipline builds team cohesion while enhancing individual core strength and focus.
Players perform the 'Downward Dog' pose during a yoga session. This practice is vital for improving flexibility in the hamstrings and shoulders, which is critical for both batsmen and bowlers.
A coach leads a cool-down discussion after a tough U-16 match. We believe in reflecting on the day's performance as a team, reinforcing strategies and building camaraderie.
About The Grind: Fitness and Conditioning
Don't expect a gym session where you just lift weights. We integrate functional strength training with cricket-specific movements, whether that means agility ladders on the turf or 108 Suryanamaskars to build endurance for long Test match days. It is all about 'vijigishu vrutti' (fighting spirit) and preparing the body to handle the demands of the game without breaking down.
Why Cricket Fitness Matters
True cricket fitness is not about how much you can bench press. It is about speed, strength, and stamina. I have seen Test matches go on for five days, and I know that the body often gives up before the mind does. Our Holistic Athlete Development Program is designed to fix that. We focus on the 'Sweat. Drill. Repeat.' mantra, ensuring our players are ready for the intensity of competitive matches.
Our Training Approach
We move away from generic exercises. Everything we do in our Pune and Mumbai facilities is tailored for cricket. Our indoor strength training sessions involve compound movements like deadlifts and squats, which are essential for building core power—critical for both batsmen and bowlers. When we are on the field, we push for explosive speed. You will hear our coaches shouting 'step uthao jara, speed badhao abhi!' (lift your steps, increase your speed) because that split-second reaction time is what separates a good player from a champion.
Beyond the Weights
Physical power is only half the battle. We incorporate Power Yoga to build mental toughness and flexibility. We don't just do it for show; our squads have completed 108 Suryanamaskars in 25 minutes. This is for stamina, focus, and injury prevention. If you want to play at the highest level, you must respect the grind.
Dilip Vengsarkar
I have seen what it takes to perform at Lord's and on the world stage. At my academy, we don't just teach cricket; we build cricketers who are physically ready for the grind of the sport.
