Project Spotlight: The 42, Kolkata Interior Design
Designing this apartment in Kolkata’s tallest residential tower was an exercise in storytelling, blending Art Deco elements with a vibrant, art-forward lifestyle for our collector clients.
The younger daughter's bedroom features custom wall art made from straw pulp, thread, and jute. The bedside table and light are custom-designed by our furniture studio, Furgonomics, creating a unique and personal space.
The family lounge is a sophisticated space featuring a striking artwork by Thukral and Tagra and the elegant 'Flutter' light by Paul Matter. The coffee table is a custom piece from our studio, Furgonomics.

The daughter's bathroom is a chic sanctuary, featuring a custom wash basin by Gomaads, terrazzo flooring, and delicate paper art by Ashoka Acharya. The space is a blend of style and function, designed for relaxation.
The daughter's bedroom is a dreamy retreat, centered around a leather and cane bed from Furgonomics. A vibrant hanging artwork by Bhuwal Prasad adds a splash of youthful imagination to the serene space.
This serene bedroom offers captivating views of the Victoria Memorial. The backdrop of etched basalt stone is complemented by artwork from Santanu Dey and Ghanashyam Latua, creating a perfect blend of natural beauty and artistic expression.
A seating area within the master bedroom, featuring a chair by Mahendra Doshi and a custom console in stone veneer and brass. The wall displays a grid of personal photographs, adding a layer of warmth and history.
About this collection
What you see here is not just luxury; it is a meticulously managed collection of objects and architecture. Our process for this project relied on precise spatial analysis to balance the family's existing art acquisitions with our custom-designed furniture from Furgonomics. We guide clients through the art asset versus decorative budget split, ensuring that every corner—from the dining sideboard with traditional Thathera brass work to the living room’s stone water feature—feels integrated into the structure, not merely placed within it.
A Narrative-First Approach
At The 42, we treated the apartment as a canvas for a multi-layered narrative. Our goal was to honor the client's passion for fine art while creating a home that feels warm and lived-in. We achieve this by layering textures—stone, brass, cane, and wood—to create a dialogue between the architecture and the objects it houses.
Integrating Traditional Crafts
We often look to traditional Indian techniques to ground modern interiors. In this dining area, for instance, the sideboard features intricate Thathera metalwork. This is not just a decorative choice; it is a way to keep ancient craft practices relevant in contemporary living. By designing our own furniture through Furgonomics, we ensure that every piece fits the room's proportions and the overall design language perfectly.
Spatial Storytelling
Every room serves a specific function in the home's larger story. The family lounge is defined by comfort and bold, contemporary art, while the private bedrooms act as sanctuaries. We utilized specific wall treatments, such as the etched basalt stone in the master bedroom, to provide a dramatic backdrop for the art collection. The lighting design throughout the apartment, including the Bocci installations, is carefully directed to highlight these pieces without causing damage, ensuring the art remains the focal point while the atmosphere remains inviting.
Our Collaboration Process
Design is a conversation. Whether we are commissioning a large-scale stone water feature or selecting a rug from Jaipur Rugs, we involve the client in every step. This ensures the home reflects their identity rather than just our design aesthetic. Our work in Kolkata is an example of what happens when heritage, modern engineering, and fine art converge.
