Art House: Classical Elegance Meets Modern Minimalism
A 2,500 sqft residence where historical architectural detailing balances with contemporary clean lines to create a sophisticated Mumbai home.
The Art House living room is a dialogue between maximal expression and minimalist restraint. An orange crushed-velvet sofa and vibrant artwork provide bold pops of color against a backdrop of classic white wall moldings and polished marble floors.
The dining room continues the theme of layered, bold character. A dark marble table is surrounded by emerald green velvet chairs, set under modern globe pendant lights. The space feels rich and full of character, yet balanced and refined.
The master bedroom is a haven of sophistication and serenity. A muted rose tufted headboard adds soft warmth, offsetting crisp white furnishings, while gold accents on handles and lamps add a touch of timeless luxury.
The guest bedroom exudes timeless charm with delicate molding details and traditional Indian gilded art. The neutral color palette creates an airy, welcoming feel, while a mix of textures adds depth and interest.
About this collection
In this 2,500 sqft apartment, we moved away from the misconception that minimalism requires empty, sterile spaces. By layering classical wall moldings over a neutral base, we created a sophisticated backdrop that comfortably holds bold pops of color—like the orange velvet sofa and emerald green dining chairs—without sacrificing the calm, airy atmosphere that defines our work.
Our approach to the Art House was an exercise in restraint. We wanted to honour the classical structure of the apartment while modernising it for a contemporary lifestyle. This project showcases our philosophy of 'quiet luxury,' where high-quality materials like Italian marble and velvet fabrics do the heavy lifting.
Designing for Balance
Minimalism is often misinterpreted as the absence of character. In this home, we used a soft, neutral palette to unify the various rooms, allowing us to introduce striking statement pieces without cluttering the visual field. The living room serves as the primary example: an orange velvet sofa provides a vibrant focal point, contrasted sharply by the quiet, white wall moldings.
The Master Retreat
The master bedroom was designed as a sanctuary. We used a muted rose tufted headboard to soften the edges of the room, paired with gold accents in the lighting and hardware to introduce a layer of warmth. The transition to the private outdoor lounge was intentional, creating a seamless flow that expands the perceived space.
Materials and Execution
Every finish in this project was selected for its longevity and tactile quality. We integrated magnetic track lighting to maintain clean ceiling lines, ensuring that the light hits the artwork and architectural features exactly as intended. This project highlights our ability to merge traditional design elements, like Indian gilded art, with the functionality of modern, minimalist luxury interiors.
Tank Design
I am Suraj from Tank Design. I believe a home should act as a retreat from the city, not a museum. My team and I focus on the small details—like hidden storage and intentional lighting—that turn a standard apartment into a functional, comfortable oasis.
