Heritage Reimagined: Blending Indian Craft with Modern Interiors
We believe your home is a canvas for your history. We integrate traditional Indian art forms—from Pichwai and Gond to intricate Sanjhi—directly into the structure of your modern living spaces.
In this living space, a vibrant triptych of Gond art is perched on a monolithic ledge above the sofa. This placement transforms the traditional art form into a contemporary focal point, complemented by modern furniture and clean lines.
Our design process often begins with a single, story-filled object. Here, an antique, intricately carved Kerala doorframe serves as the anchor, setting a tone of heritage that is then layered with modern furniture and textiles.
We drew inspiration from the traditional craft of Sanjhi, the art of paper cutting, to create this contemporary partitioning screen. The design is a modern reinterpretation of the floral details found in the Taj Mahal, rendered in frosted glass.
For this pooja room, we restored an old Chaukhat (doorframe) from Kerala and paired it with traditional lamps. The door itself features fabric sandwiched between glass, a modern technique that respectfully frames the heritage element.
A traditional Pichwai painting, rich in detail and narrative, is given pride of place in a modern living room. By placing it against a neutral wall with minimalist furniture, the artwork's intricacy and color are brought to the forefront.
This video offers a glimpse into the world of Kantha, the traditional embroidery of rural Bengal. We visited the artisans to understand the story behind the craft, which informs how we integrate these narrative-rich textiles into our projects.
Our journey to Shantiniketan for the Bengal Biennale, a place steeped in art and culture. This visit allowed us to connect with local craft traditions, from papier-mâché to murals, inspiring new ways to incorporate these elements into our designs.
This modern mandir design, featured in Design Pataki, showcases a rustic stone wall engraved with sacred scriptures alongside an antique Pichwai painting of Palitana. It is a harmonious blend of ancient spirituality and contemporary design.
At the landings of the main staircase in the Bammi Residence, we installed intricate Sanjhi screens by artist Vijay Kumar Verma. This traditional paper-cutting art adds a layer of delicate craftsmanship and cultural heritage to the architectural journey.
A view of the marble staircase alongside a detailed Sanjhi screen. The geometric precision of the traditional craft complements the clean lines of the modern staircase, creating a dialogue between two different design languages.
About Heritage Reimagined
We do not just hang art on your walls. We treat it as part of the architecture. Whether it is restoring an antique Kerala doorframe for a prayer room or commissioning paper-cutting screens for a staircase, our focus is on making tradition liveable. We help you select and source pieces that resonate with your lifestyle, rather than creating a static display that feels like a museum.
Integrating heritage is not about replicating the past, it is about making it functional for today. We work with clients to bring elements like Pichwai, Gond, and Kalamkari into contemporary environments. This process involves more than choosing decor, it involves a conversation about how a space functions and how your personality can be reflected through materials. We often start by identifying an anchor piece—perhaps an antique door or a significant painting—and building the room's narrative around it. For structural features, we collaborate with skilled craftspeople to create custom installations that blur the line between building elements and decorative art. Our approach focuses on long-term value, ensuring that the art we select is not just a visual trend but an investment that gains meaning over time. We also manage the technical aspects, from lighting audits to ensure protection against UV damage, to coordinating with electrical teams for seamless installation. Whether it is a single zone in a home or a multi-floor residence, our goal remains the same: a living environment that feels authentic, comfortable, and deeply personal.
