The Vaulted Haus: A Study in Monochrome

byDIG ArchitectsTakes projects across Mumbai Metropolitan AreaView full gallery

We approach volume and light through a lens of architectural restraint. This project demonstrates how vaulted ceilings and a monochromatic grey palette can transform large, impersonal spaces into cohesive, intimate volumes.

A view of the formal living area, showing how the modular sofa and dark coffee tables anchor the space beneath the geometric vaulted ceiling.

Another perspective of the living room, emphasizing the abundant natural light and the integration of indoor plants to add life to the monochromatic scheme.

We designed this expansive living room as a large cuboidal volume, using architectural elements to manage its scale. The ceiling is subdivided into quadrants, with dramatic vaults that draw the eye and create a sense of rhythm, an approach that renders the design intent authentic. The refined grey scale palette is softened by plush, minimalist furniture and a statement spherical pendant light, establishing a dialogue between the living and dining areas.

A wide shot connecting the living and dining areas, demonstrating our concept of creating a dialogue between spaces to make activities like dining less isolated.

The dining area is centered around the 'Moon' pendant by Davide Groppi, which holds the space together. The table is set on light grey Ceppo flooring, with a backdrop of a rugged stone feature wall.

About this collection

To manage the scale of the large, cuboidal living area, we subdivided the ceiling into quadrants, allowing the vaults to cut through the length of the space. This is not purely aesthetic; it is a structural intervention designed to manage volume, making the room feel grounded and intentional rather than cavernous.

Our design process for The Vaulted Haus was rooted in a dialogue between materials. We chose a refined grey scale to focus the eye on texture—Ceppo de Grey stone, raw lime plaster, and the industrial grid of Gabion walls. Every element, from the frosted glass brick partitions that refract light to the Davide Groppi pendant anchoring the dining area, serves to create a rhythm within the home.

When we design, we think about movement. The transition passages are treated with the same architectural rigor as the main living spaces, using vaulted ceilings and lighting to guide the user. The custom joinery, including veneer strips and sand-blasted glass, is fabricated to integrate seamlessly into the architecture. We do not believe in disconnected rooms; we chase one big idea—in this case, the interplay of shadow and structure—and let it guide every decision, from the floor layout to the bespoke metal mesh detailing. This is interior architecture for those who prefer drama in the form of quiet, thoughtful spaces.
