The Grey House: Minimalist Duplex Design
We treat minimalism as a tool to tell your story, not just an aesthetic. This 3,000 sq ft Mumbai duplex is a study in textures and clean lines, designed to be a functional sanctuary where every element has a purpose.
We are proud to have our project, 'The Grey House', featured on the cover of The Neptune Glitz magazine. This image captures the essence of the home's elevated minimalism and the interplay of light and texture in the double-height living space.
A walk-through of 'The Grey House', showcasing its open spaces, clean lines, and muted monochrome color palette. Our goal was to create a modern minimalist home where simplicity and functionality allow each design element to shine with purpose.
The main living area features a striking black textured wall that provides a dramatic backdrop for the contemporary art and minimalist furniture. The open-plan layout connects the living and dining areas, flowing out to an open-to-sky balcony.
In design, we often face challenges from structural elements or Vastu requirements. Here, we explain how we cleverly concealed a large structural column and a maintenance shaft behind a beautiful feature wall with sliding shutters, creating hidden storage and maintaining a clean aesthetic.
The master bedroom continues the minimalist theme with a combination of concrete texture and fluted panels behind the bed. The design creates a calm and restful atmosphere, with large windows offering expansive city views.
This guest room was designed as a multipurpose space for the family to read or play. We installed a custom Murphy bed that easily transforms the room into a comfortable bedroom for guests, demonstrating our focus on flexible and functional design.
We designed this cozy nook as a home office and library. The custom-built shelves are organized to house the family's extensive book collection, with the books themselves adding pops of color to the otherwise neutral and minimalist space.
The powder bathroom combines the raw beauty of concrete walls with the organic warmth of a live-edge wood counter. A natural stone sink and a simple pendant light complete this study in texture and minimalism.
Small details create a seamless look. We explain our technique of matching the skirting to the wall color and using frameless aluminum door frames to achieve a clean, uninterrupted finish, reinforcing the home's minimalist aesthetic.
Designing a duplex apartment requires creating a harmonious flow between two levels. We used a consistent palette of materials and textures while introducing subtle variations to define different spaces, ensuring the entire home feels connected yet dynamic.
About The Grey House: An Award-Winning Minimalist Duplex
Many people think minimalism means empty, sterile boxes, but for us, it is about clever problem-solving. In this duplex, we had to work around a massive structural column behind the bed. Instead of hiding it with a clunky box, we designed a wall with sliding fluted shutters that camouflage both the column and a maintenance shaft, giving you extra storage while keeping the lines clean and uninterrupted.
Designing a duplex apartment comes with its own set of challenges, mainly ensuring the two levels feel connected rather than disjointed. For The Grey House, our goal was to maintain a harmonious flow. We kept the material palette consistent—concrete, wood, and neutral tones—to create a unified identity across both floors while varying the textures to define specific areas.
Modern minimalism is often misunderstood as just 'less,' but we see it as intentional design. We paid attention to the details that most overlook. For instance, in conventional homes, skirting boards often break the visual line of the wall. We matched our skirting directly to the wall colors—black skirting for black walls, white for white—to let the walls meet the floor seamlessly. We also did away with traditional door frames, using aluminum profiles that sit flush within the wall to create a thin, clean groove rather than a protruding frame.
Functional storage was another priority. We believe in design that serves a purpose, so every shelf and cabinet in this home was built for a reason. Whether it is the custom-built library nook or the hidden storage behind the master bed, we ensure the house remains clutter-free without sacrificing utility. It is not just about making a space look good for photos; it is about creating a layout that works for the way you live every day.
