Bharatanatyam Studio Practice in Delhi NCR
The studio is my space for disciplined training and creative dialogue, where the rigour of technique meets the freedom of exploration.
A solo practice session in the studio, working on a 'jathi' or pure dance sequence. The studio is where the hard work happens, and having time to dance without an agenda is crucial for creative exploration and maintaining technical sharpness.
Practicing 'karanas', dynamic poses described in the Natya Shastra, with a fellow dancer. This kind of partner work makes practice more enjoyable and helps in refining complex movements through mutual feedback and energy.
About In the Studio: Practice and Collaboration
When you visit my Gurgaon studio, you will notice the sprung wooden flooring immediately. It is not just for aesthetics, it is a non-negotiable for anyone serious about Bharatanatyam to prevent knee strain and ensure long-term sustainability. During these sessions, whether we are breaking down a complex jathi or refining abhinaya, we focus on the mechanics of the movement so you can practice safely.
The studio is where the heavy lifting happens. It is where tradition is not just repeated but understood. My approach combines the strict Thanjavur style lineage from Guru Saroja Vaidyanathan with a modern analytical lens. We do not just execute adavus; we deconstruct them. Why does this specific foot placement matter in the Natya Shastra? How does a karana relate to historical sculpture? We answer these questions through repetitive, disciplined drills.
My Approach to Practice
- Technique & Mechanics: We prioritize the 'how' and 'why' of the movement. From basic adavu alignment to the complexities of sollukattu, we dissect the rhythm.
- Small Cohorts: Classes are limited to 5-10 students. This ensures I can provide individual feedback on your posture and expression, which is impossible in larger groups.
- Theory & Philosophy: Dance is a language. We delve into mythology, literature, and the texts behind the art, connecting what you learn in the studio to a broader understanding of Indian culture.
Practical Details
For those who travel or cannot make it to the Gurgaon studio, I offer a hybrid option. While offline presence allows for the best corrections, Zoom sessions ensure you stay consistent with your practice. Whether you are returning to dance after a break or preparing for an Arangetram, the curriculum is adapted to your pace and capacity.
