Bharatanatyam Training: The Studio Experience
Step inside my studio at Triveni Kala Sangam, where we follow the timeless Guru-Shishya tradition. From mastering fundamental Adavus to understanding the rhythm and theory behind the movement, every class is a journey into the heart of Bharatanatyam.
A typical class at Triveni Kala Sangam, where students practice their formations in unison. The large mirror is an important tool, helping dancers refine their posture and alignment.
Here, I lead the class in practicing the 'Tahata Jham Tari Ta' adavu. Mastering these fundamental steps is crucial for building a strong foundation and graceful execution in Bharatanatyam.
A close-up demonstration of the 'Kuditta Metta' adavu, focusing on the intricate footwork. This basic step is a favorite among students and is essential for developing rhythm and stamina.
Leading a theory session during my "Introduction to Bharatanatyam" workshop for seniors. It was a joy to see these ladies, all new to the art form, learn with such dedication and happiness.

Rehearsals in full swing for the Debadhara Festival. This clip shows my students practicing a piece from "Kalashruti: Sounds of Time," a thematic performance exploring the cycle of time.
A beautiful Teacher's Day moment, surrounded by my adult students. As their Acharya, it is a privilege to guide their journey and witness their passion for dance grow with every class.
More Teacher's Day celebrations with another lovely batch of my students at Triveni Kala Sangam. The bond we share in the studio is built on mutual respect and a shared love for the art.

A moment of quiet focus during a workshop in Guwahati, where students take notes on dance theory. Understanding the 'why' behind the movement is as important as the physical practice itself.
About The Learning Journey: In the Studio
Classes at Triveni Kala Sangam offer an authentic, heritage-filled environment for learning. Please note that this is a traditional, naturally ventilated studio space, not a modern AC facility. We focus on the Guru-Shishya system, meaning every student—regardless of age or experience level—receives direct guidance as we move from foundational Adavus to nuanced Abhinaya.
My training method is built on the Kalakshetra style, which prioritizes clean lines, precise posture, and a deep understanding of dance theory. We do not just teach steps; we study the 'why' behind every gesture.
The Learning Path
- Foundation: Beginners start with the basics—posture, Adavus (footwork), and simple Mudras. We ensure your alignment is correct before moving to complex rhythm cycles (Talam).
- Theory: Classes include theory sessions because I believe a dancer must know the history and grammar of the art form, not just the physical execution.
- Environment: Whether you are an adult looking to reconnect with art or a child starting your first steps, you will be part of a group where peer interaction is encouraged. We maintain a disciplined dress code (practice saree or Salwar-Kameez) to keep the spirit of the tradition alive.
Practical Details
- Venue: All regular classes are held at Triveni Kala Sangam, Mandi House.
- Structure: We offer both intensive 5-day introductory workshops and ongoing monthly training. If you are new, I highly recommend the 5-day course. It allows you to test your aptitude and get a feel for the classroom dynamic before committing to the longer, more rigorous monthly curriculum.
- What to bring: Please arrive prepared for a physical session. While we provide the space and the instruction, students are expected to bring their own practice uniforms and ghungroos.
