Performances, Press & Posters
A glimpse into my journey as a performer, featuring show announcements, critical moments, and the rehearsals that bring classical dance to life.
Feeling supremely grateful for the artistic opportunities of 2024. This image captures an intimate moment with the audience, a connection that I cherish at every performance, from large theatres to small chamber concerts.
I was humbled to receive the ‘Natya Ratna’ award at the Trinity Arts Festival. This is another impetus for me to continue striving to serve the art in the most honest way possible.
From the first performance of last winter season in India. This was my first Kutcheri with my husband Sharan Subramanian in India, a truly memorable experience with the best musicians.
What does "Riyaaz" or practice mean to me? It's not just a daily ritual, but a way of life. It is reading, researching, teaching, and engaging with the art of others, a conduit to re-gift the experience of dance.
A rehearsal video for the Diaspora Dance Festival, where I prepared to present "Paavai," a work on the poet-saint Goda Devi.
Dancers became friends, friends became dancers. A beautiful outdoor photoshoot with fellow dancer Utthara Unni, celebrating our shared love for the art form.
A moment from "Sarvasya" at the Samarpan festival in Mangalore, where I shared the stage with a mirrored version of myself, creating a unique visual effect.
About this collection
These posters and press features are only the public side of my work. Behind every announcement is a months-long process of research and musical collaboration. When I step on stage, I am not just presenting a sequence; I am facilitating a conversation between movement and the live ensemble of musicians that accompanies me.
My practice sits at the intersection of academic research and performance. Whether I am preparing for a traditional Margam or a thematic production like 'Akhyat Ākhyānā', the goal is the same—to make ancient poetry feel urgent and relatable today. The posters and press mentions you see here represent collaborations with diverse venues, from Chennai's traditional Sabhas to international stages in London and Berlin.
My performances rely heavily on the energy of my musical team. I do not perform solo in the literal sense; I work closely with vocalists, nattuvangam artists, and mridangam players who shape the rhythmic landscape of each piece. This collaborative nature extends to my approach to rehearsals, which I view as a 'Riyaaz' or way of life rather than just prep work. If you are looking to host a performance, whether a chamber concert or a full-scale thematic show, know that you are bringing in not just a dancer, but a complete artistic narrative that has been researched, refined, and lived.
Divya Ravi
I approach every stage as an opportunity to dig into stories that history forgot. Whether it is a small chamber concert or a large festival production, my goal is to ensure the classical feels intimate, personal, and vital for today's audience.
