About Kanhopatra: A Saint's Story
In this production, I use traditional Kanjivaram silk and intense red alta to physically embody the vulnerability of Kanhopatra. It is a 15th-century story, but through my choreography and live musical accompaniment, I bridge the centuries to make her struggle with devotion feel immediate and deeply personal.
The Artistic Process
Kanhopatra is more than a performance for me; it is a cathartic excavation of 15th-century Marathi history. I spent months researching the Abhangs written by this saint-poet, trying to move past the myths to find the human woman underneath. The performance focuses on her vulnerability, the agony of her social position, and her ultimate surrender to the divine.
What to Expect
This is a thematic Bharatanatyam production that leans heavily into Abhinaya (the art of expression). Unlike a traditional Margam, the narrative arc here is non-linear and intensely focused on the emotional landscape.
- Live Music: The performance is incomplete without my musicians. They provide a live soundscape that interacts with the poetry in real-time, matching the shifts in mood from quiet contemplation to desperate pleading.
- Stagecraft: Because I perform this in both intimate chamber settings and larger auditoriums, I prioritize lighting that highlights the minute facial expressions. The red alta on my hands is not just aesthetic; it is a vital tool for the storytelling, drawing the audience's eyes to the gestures of surrender.
Why This Story Matters
Bringing the story of a female saint to a modern stage allows us to talk about identity, faith, and resilience in a way that feels incredibly relevant. If you are hosting a festival, a private chamber gathering, or a cultural event, this production offers a deep, thought-provoking experience that connects your audience to the rich, forgotten voices of the past. I am happy to include a post-performance Q&A to discuss the research and the history behind Kanhopatra's poetry.
