byDivya RaviPerforms across the United KingdomView full gallery

A visceral exploration of the 15th-century Marathi saint-poet, where Bharatanatyam meets the raw poetry of surrender and devotion.

Kanhopatra gets me every single time. To feel her vulnerability, agony, and ecstasy through her own poetry is the greatest blessing of my artistic journey.

Another moment from Kanhopatra. Every performance of this piece is an inexplicably exposing and cathartic experience.

A moment of devotion from my performance of Kanhopatra. Her story of surrender is one that resonates deeply with me.

The story of Kanhopatra is one I feel compelled to share. Plans are underway to take this performance to more cities next season.

A close-up capturing the intense emotion of portraying Kanhopatra, a 15th-century Marathi saint-poet.

A moment of desperate pleading from the story of Kanhopatra, a performance that is both emotionally draining and artistically fulfilling.

A beautiful moment from Kanhopatra captured at the Samarpana Festival. To get into her skin through her words is an opportunity I am always grateful for.

About this collection

In this production, I use traditional Kanjivaram silk and intense red alta to physically embody the vulnerability of Kanhopatra. It is a 15th-century story, but through my choreography and live musical accompaniment, I bridge the centuries to make her struggle with devotion feel immediate and deeply personal.

The Artistic Process

Kanhopatra is more than a performance for me; it is a cathartic excavation of 15th-century Marathi history. I spent months researching the Abhangs written by this saint-poet, trying to move past the myths to find the human woman underneath. The performance focuses on her vulnerability, the agony of her social position, and her ultimate surrender to the divine.

What to Expect

This is a thematic Bharatanatyam production that leans heavily into Abhinaya (the art of expression). Unlike a traditional Margam, the narrative arc here is non-linear and intensely focused on the emotional landscape.

  • Live Music: The performance is incomplete without my musicians. They provide a live soundscape that interacts with the poetry in real-time, matching the shifts in mood from quiet contemplation to desperate pleading.
  • Stagecraft: Because I perform this in both intimate chamber settings and larger auditoriums, I prioritize lighting that highlights the minute facial expressions. The red alta on my hands is not just aesthetic; it is a vital tool for the storytelling, drawing the audience's eyes to the gestures of surrender.

Why This Story Matters

Bringing the story of a female saint to a modern stage allows us to talk about identity, faith, and resilience in a way that feels incredibly relevant. If you are hosting a festival, a private chamber gathering, or a cultural event, this production offers a deep, thought-provoking experience that connects your audience to the rich, forgotten voices of the past. I am happy to include a post-performance Q&A to discuss the research and the history behind Kanhopatra's poetry.

I don't just perform Bharatanatyam; I live the stories of poets who have been silent for centuries. My work is research-driven, blending classical steps with the raw, unspoken emotions of figures like Kanhopatra to create a performance that stays with you long after the music stops.
