Pop Art Ceramic Sculptures
Stepping out of my usual whimsical style, I've translated the bold energy of vintage comics into hand-built ceramic art. These 3D sculptures bring vibrant color and a playful, retro twist to any shelf.

About Pop Art Creations
People often ask how I get those vibrant, comic-book colors on clay. It isn't just a quick paint job; I use a specific layering technique with underglazes, which I then fire at high temperatures to lock in that glossy finish. Because every single piece is hand-built without molds, no two busts or figures are identical—the 'Pop' comes with its own unique personality, complete with little quirks from my fingers.
Why Pop Art?
I usually stick to my owls, gnomes, and nature-inspired pieces, but this collection was about letting loose. I wanted to capture the flat, graphic charm of 70s advertising and comic strips in something you can actually hold. Achieving those crisp, bold lines on an organic, hand-built ceramic form isn't easy, but that’s where the fun lies.
My Process
Every figure starts as a slab of clay. I don't use molds, so every facial expression, hairstyle, or 'bam' bubble you see is carved by hand. Once the form is set and dried, I paint the features using lead-free underglazes. The real challenge is the glazing; achieving that uniform, vibrant finish requires careful control in the kiln. If the temperature fluctuates by even a few degrees, the colors can shift, so I monitor each firing like a hawk.
Customizing Your Piece
These pieces have been incredibly well-received, and they often sell out faster than I can pull them from the kiln. If you see something you love here but it’s already marked as 'sold'—or if you have a specific character, quote, or retro theme in mind—please reach out. I can often recreate these designs or craft something fresh just for you. Just remember, since I make everything from scratch in my Kalyan studio, lead times depend on how many kiln cycles are currently in the queue!
