Clay goes far beyond functional mugs. I love helping you bring your most expressive ideas to life—from hand-sculpted character busts to large, abstract installations that tell a story.

The evolution of a sculpture. This series shows a hand-built portrait bust from its raw clay form, to post-bisque firing, and finally with two different metallic glaze finishes.

I am Groot. I had so much fun hand-building and sculpting this Groot planter. It’s amazing how you can bring characters to life with clay, and he makes a perfect home for a small plant.

This is a character bust sculpted by Varun, one of the talented artists in our community. He lets the clay guide him, resulting in expressive and whimsical forms.

More character sculptures by Varun. He enjoys breaking away from realistic forms to explore the fun and personality that can be found in caricature.

A unique commission, this is a ceramic sculpture of a guitar. It was a challenging and rewarding piece to construct, combining hand-building and carving techniques.

This terracotta piece is an exploration of form, featuring a smooth, wheel-thrown body with a hand-built chain attached. It plays with the ideas of connection and containment.

A small, rustic terracotta bowl with a knotted handle, sculpted by Varun. It has a wonderfully earthy and ancient feel to it.

About Unique Sculptures & Abstract Forms

For every custom sculpture, we start by discussing where the piece will live, as light and space change how a form feels. I work primarily with hand-building and coiling techniques, meaning no molds are ever involved, so you get a piece that is truly one of a kind. Expect a collaborative process where I send you updates as the clay dries, ensuring the expression or abstract curve is exactly what you envisioned.

When we talk about sculpture, we are really talking about patience and conversation with the medium. Whether it is a portrait bust that captures a specific emotion or a piece of abstract home decor that anchors a room, the process is always a journey.

I rely heavily on traditional methods like coiling, slab building, and pinch-pot sculpting. Unlike mass-produced decor, these pieces allow for the beauty of 'imperfection'—a fingerprint here, a subtle variation in the curve there. This is how we ensure that no two pieces are identical, even if we are working from the same sketch.

My Approach to Custom Commissions

  • Consultation: We sit down (virtually or at my HSR Layout studio) to talk about the 'why' behind the piece. Is it a gift? A centerpiece for your living room? Knowing the context helps me choose the right clay body, whether it is earthy terracotta or a smoother, structural stoneware.
  • The Build: Hand-building takes time. For large sculptures, this might involve structural armature or layered coil-building, which can take weeks of careful drying to prevent cracks.
  • Finishing Touches: This is where the personality comes out. We can play with textures—carving, sgraffito, or raw clay finishes—to make sure the piece feels right to the touch as well as the eye.

I am happy to work with you on character-based sculptures, abstract geometric forms, or even functional-sculptural hybrids like unique light fixtures. If you have an idea, let us chat and see how we can bring it out of the clay.
