Artistic Ceramic Pieces & Hand-Painted Plates
Stories told in clay. My artistic collection features hand-built textures, sgraffito illustrations, and whimsical figurines that bring a human touch to your living space.
Titled 'Fleeting Oasis', this large sgraffito wall plate features abstract, feather-like forms. It’s a piece of ceramic art that plays with pattern and earthy tones, designed to be a contemplative focal point in any room.
The finished leaf platter, styled on a simple table runner. The deep, flowing glazes catch the light, highlighting the intricate veins of the leaf and turning a natural object into a lasting piece of ceramic home decor.
Another view of the large, leaf-shaped platter, showing how the glaze pools and breaks over the texture. The single orange provides a sense of scale for this unique, nature-inspired centerpiece.
This is the leaf platter in its 'greenware' stage, before it was fired. You can clearly see the delicate impression of the real leaf I used to create the texture, capturing its natural beauty in raw clay.
'The Boar with Balloons' is a whimsical, hand-painted plate that tells a little story. I enjoy creating these narrative pieces that blend folk art style with a touch of modern humor.
A work-in-progress shot of a folksy rooster plate. I'm using underglazes to hand-paint the design, layering colors to create a vibrant, illustrative piece of stoneware.
A hand-built stoneware plate featuring a sgraffito crow. I am drawn to the character and intelligence of crows, and they often appear in my work as symbols of the urban wildlife of Mumbai.
A close-up of the hand-carved crow plate. The sgraffito technique allows for such expressive detail, capturing the texture of the feathers and the bird's sharp eye.
'Not Yet a Murder' is a small, hand-formed bowl depicting a common Mumbai scene: two crows on a tangle of wires. It’s a piece of urban-inspired pottery that finds beauty in the everyday chaos.
Another take on my crow-on-a-wire theme, this hand-built stoneware plate captures a quiet moment amidst the city's hum. These pieces are my tribute to the resilient nature that thrives everywhere.
About Artistic & Thematic Pieces
When you pick up one of these pieces, you are holding a story carved directly into clay. I use the sgraffito technique to scratch through layers of glaze, revealing intricate details like urban crows or organic floral patterns. These are high-fired stoneware pieces, which means while they function as unique decor, they are also durable enough for daily use in your kitchen or home.
Every piece in this collection starts as a lump of stoneware clay, pinched and coiled by hand. I avoid the potter's wheel because I want to keep the process messy and the results organic. You will notice finger marks, wonky edges, and glazes that react differently every time they hit the kiln. That is intentional.
My artistic work often focuses on narrative. You will see recurring themes here: the resilience of Mumbai's urban wildlife, like my crow-on-a-wire series, or the quiet beauty of a leaf found during a walk. The sgraffito plates, such as the 'Fleeting Oasis' or my folksy animal figurines, are crafted to hold a memory rather than just serve food.
If you are looking for something specific, I also work on Custom Narrative Commissions. This is a collaborative project where we can take a shared memory—a pet, a song, or a pet phrase—and turn it into a triptych of tiles or a set of plates. These commissions require 3 to 5 weeks for the sculpting, slow drying, and double-firing process. Whether you want a whimsical snake plate for your desk or a sculptural tripod bowl for your centerpiece, these items are designed to be lived with, not just stared at.
Studio Gariffiti
I am Garima, and for me, pottery is just a way to slow down and hold onto things that matter. Whether it is a crow on a wire or a leaf I found on a walk, I try to capture those little moments in clay, keeping the process messy and the results entirely honest.
