Rescue & Recovery: The Journey to Healing

byCupaRescues across BengaluruView full gallery

From emergency roadside trauma care to long-term sanctuary life, see how our team turns distress into second chances for Bangalore's large animals.

The rescue begins with a call from a concerned citizen and our dedicated ambulance team. This is the first step in bringing an injured animal like Manohar from the street into our care.

Upon arrival, we discovered Manohar had a severe injury to his hind leg. We use specialized equipment like this sling to support him during treatment, minimizing his discomfort and aiding his recovery.

Under the expert care of our veterinary team, Manohar began his long journey to healing. Consistent medical attention and a safe environment are crucial for large animal trauma recovery.

The difference in just a short time is incredible. The top photo shows Manohar when he first arrived, unable to stand. The bottom photo shows him gaining strength, a testament to the care he is receiving.

Sometimes, the animal is too distressed to be moved. Our team is equipped to provide critical on-spot treatment in collaboration with other local welfare groups, ensuring immediate care is given.

A throwback to when some of our current residents were just babies. Many, like this little one, came to us in need of urgent care and a safe place to grow up.

This is Asha Kutti when she was a calf, recovering from an injury. It's a long road for many of our rescues, but we are with them every step of the way.

About this collection

When a rescue call comes in, speed matters. Our trauma team at LARRC doesn't just provide shelter; we stabilize critical fractures, treat infected wounds, and manage trauma on-site whenever possible. Every animal that comes to us has a different survival story, and seeing them transition from being unable to walk to grazing freely in our sanctuary is the fuel that keeps our team going.

The Reality of Rescue

Rescue work isn't just about picking up an animal. It's about assessment, stability, and patience. When we get a call—whether it's a calf like Manohar with a severe leg injury from a hit-and-run or a horse suffering from years of abuse—our first priority is pain management.

Our team, including experts like Dr. Padnekar, often provides critical, on-spot treatment in collaboration with local groups. For large animals, this often means setting up slings to support their weight during recovery, as they cannot simply lie down for weeks.

The Road to Recovery

Recovery at CUPA LARRC is about more than just medicine. It is about emotional rehabilitation.

  • Trauma Care: We use specialized equipment for fracture stabilization and wound management.
  • Socialization: We believe in the healing power of a herd. By allowing animals to socialize, graze freely, and form natural bonds, we reduce the stress that prevents physical healing.
  • Nutrition: We provide high-quality fodder and mineral-fortified feed to help them regain the strength they lost on the streets.

Why Every Story Matters

Many of our residents came to us as babies, struggling to survive after being abandoned. Watching them grow from vulnerable, lap-sized calves into independent residents of our sanctuary reminds us why we do what we do.

We don't just treat and release. For many large animals who have been discarded, we offer a lifetime of care. If you want to be part of this journey, you can help us by sponsoring their medical care or simply coming by to spend time with them. Your support directly funds the fodder, medicine, and labor required to keep these animals safe, fed, and loved.
