Behind the Curtain: Our Space and People
We believe a space is shaped by the stories shared within it. This is our home for art, connection, and the collaborative chaos that brings every performance to life.
The entrance to our performance space. The wooden sign and exposed brick wall welcome you into our intimate black box theatre, a space designed for stories and connections.
Our performance hall, ready for an audience. The flexible seating arrangement, with its mix of chairs and comfortable sofas, ensures that every seat has a great view and feels close to the action.
A view of our event board, where posters for upcoming shows are displayed. It's always exciting to see the month's diverse lineup of music, theatre, and comedy all in one place.
A group photo of the team behind the 'Many Moons' show, a testament to the collaborative spirit we foster. We believe in showering our artists with "mad trust" to enable open-ended, experimental work.
About Behind the Curtain: Our Space & People
You will notice the exposed brick and close-up seating aren't just for aesthetics. The layout is intentionally tight, keeping the audience less than six feet from the performer to ensure that raw, unfiltered energy transmits across the room. We don't just rent out a stage; we handle the technical rig—lights, sound, and projection—so your focus remains entirely on your craft, whether you are bringing a Carnatic concert or a stand-up set to life.
At the heart of Courtyard Koota is the belief that a space is only as good as the conversations it starts. When Natasha, Sridevi, Nanu, and Khushi set this up seven years ago, the goal wasn't just to provide a venue in Kengeri, but to create a 'Koota'—a gathering place for artists and audiences to sit together, often over tea, long after the show ends.
Our infrastructure reflects this. We offer a 4-hour exclusive slot for our black box theatre, which includes full access to our professional lighting rig and a crystal-clear PA system. We don't just hand over keys; our in-house technician stays with you to manage cues, ensuring your show runs smoothly.
For performers, this means you have the freedom to experiment. Because we maintain an intimate capacity of 80-100, you don't need to shout to be heard. Many artists use our space for everything from open mics and jazz gigs to classical dance recitals and collaborative theatre. We prioritize what we call 'mad trust'—the idea that you should have the freedom to try something risky, and we will handle the logistical heavy lifting.
If you are planning an event, come visit the space. You will see how the acoustic treatment and climate control create a world entirely separate from the city noise outside. We are open to all, from seasoned professionals to local community groups looking for a stage.
Courtyard Koota
We are a collective—Natasha, Sridevi, Nanu, Khushi, and a whole community of artists who believe in building bridges through stories. We didn’t just build walls and a stage; we created a space where creativity thrives because of the people, not in spite of them.
