The Nature of Being: Surreal Nature & Feminine Illustration
A graduate thesis collection exploring the essence of womanhood through surreal nature patterns and biological forms.
"Bioluminescence I," the first piece from my thesis series "The Nature of Being." This illustration visualizes the inner light and energy of the feminine form, drawing a parallel between human biology and the luminous organisms of the natural world.
Titled "In Bloom," this artwork portrays an introspective figure enveloped by surreal floral forms. It explores themes of personal growth, protection, and the beauty of a rich inner world, using organic shapes and soft gradients.
"Anthurium Empresses," a piece that merges the female form with the elegant, heart-shaped anthurium flower. This illustration explores concepts of strength, beauty, and regality within womanhood, set against a lush, dark backdrop.
This award-winning illustration from my thesis depicts a figure intertwined with plant-like veins and leaves. It represents the concept of being rooted in nature, exploring how our identity is deeply connected to the biological world around us.
A variation of my "Bioluminescence I" piece, presented without the oval frame. This version allows the glowing, surreal figure to exist freely in the dark, emphasizing the contrast and the intricate details of the internal light forms.
The award-winning version of "Bioluminescence I," recognized by Creative Quarterly. This image highlights the professional recognition my personal and thematic work has received.
A detailed crop of the "Anthurium Empresses" illustration. This closer view emphasizes the velvety textures, subtle gradients, and the dew-like drops that add a sense of life and realism to the surreal scene.
About The Nature of Being: Womanhood & Biology
These pieces were born from my graduate thesis at MICA, where I experimented with bioluminescent aesthetics and organic linework to depict the liminal space between human biology and nature. If you are looking for illustration that moves away from traditional realism to embrace something more surreal and psychologically resonant, these specific techniques are the foundation of what I can build for your project.
The 'Nature of Being' series was an intense period of exploration where I wanted to see where the line blurs between a person and a plant. My goal was to create a visual language that feels both deeply human and completely alien—a way to map emotions like anger, escapism, or introspection onto organic structures.
The Technique
Most of these illustrations use a mix of digital and analog processes. I start with pencil and sketchbook work to get the core idea, then move to Procreate to build those velvet-like gradients and the distinct glowing, bioluminescent effects you see here. The 'Anthurium Empresses' piece, for example, required focusing heavily on textural contrast—making the petals feel soft enough to touch while keeping the overall composition sharp and surreal.
Why This Matters for Your Project
When we collaborate on a project, whether it is editorial design, a book cover, or branding, I apply this same narrative-driven approach. My work isn't just decorative; it is designed to communicate the soul of a story or the values of a brand.
Recognition
I was incredibly honored when the Creative Quarterly jury recognized this series. It validated that this intersection of nature and feminine identity resonates beyond my own studio.
If you have a concept that needs to feel alive, moody, or slightly offbeat, my background in editorial and narrative illustration allows me to adapt this style to fit your specific needs. Let's create something that stands out.
