Adaptive Reuse & Heritage Conservation Architecture
We breathe new life into forgotten structures, turning the echoes of the past into vibrant, functional spaces for today. Our approach honors local history while ensuring every building remains relevant and sustainable.
**Monokuro, Ahmedabad:** Our adaptive reuse project, 'Monokuro', was featured in multiple design magazines. We repurposed an industrial building, preserving its shell while inserting a modern workspace centered around a green courtyard.
**Monokuro, Ahmedabad:** We were thrilled that Monokuro was selected for an open house event by Ahmedabad Commons. This allowed the public to experience firsthand how we transform existing structures into sustainable and human-centric environments.
**Monokuro, Ahmedabad:** This video collage shows visitors exploring the Monokuro workspace during the open house. It captures the project's success in creating a welcoming and inspiring environment from a repurposed factory.
**Monokuro, Ahmedabad:** More scenes from the open house, showing people interacting within the glass-walled meeting rooms and the central courtyard. The design fosters transparency and a connection to nature, enriching the workplace experience.
**Monokuro, Ahmedabad:** Our project was featured on Designboom, a leading global design publication. The feature highlighted our approach to repurposing spaces to be sustainable, functional, and socio-culturally significant.
**Monokuro, Ahmedabad:** A screenshot of the feature in Architecture + Design magazine, which focused on the theme of "Reimagining Place-Making" through our adaptive reuse of the Monokuro building.
**Monokuro, Ahmedabad:** The project was also published on Archello, an international platform for architecture. This recognition underscores the project's successful blend of historical preservation and contemporary design.
**Monokuro, Ahmedabad:** Another feature, this time in Rethinking The Future, which showcased Monokuro as an exemplary office building. Our approach prioritizes the human experience and connection to the built environment.
**Dharamshala Restoration, Uttarakhand:** This project involves restoring a 100-year-old heritage structure built along the Indo-Tibet trade route. Our design aims to create an integrated tourism program, combining the restoration with a community-run angling camp.
**Dharamshala Restoration, Uttarakhand:** The stone structure, built by Jasuli Devi, features beautiful arched openings. Our restoration work focuses on preserving these historical elements while making the building functional for modern use.
About Adaptive Reuse & Heritage Conservation
In our Monokuro project in Ahmedabad, we did not simply renovate an old industrial building. We preserved its original shell while integrating light-filled, modern workspaces around a new central courtyard. True adaptive reuse involves understanding the structural rhythm and thermal response of a building, then modifying it to fit contemporary life without erasing the history held within the walls.
Adaptive reuse is our way of respecting the layered history of a place. Whether it is an industrial warehouse in an urban center or a stone structure along the Indo-Tibet trade route, we approach each site as a dialogue between the past and the present.
Sustainability guides every decision we make. We study the load-bearing walls and material history of an existing structure to maximize salvageable elements, reducing the need for new materials. In our work on the 100-year-old Jasuli Devi heritage site in Uttarakhand, we focused on restoring traditional arched openings while integrating a modern program for local tourism. This process is never about making a building look old or new. It is about making it functional for how you live today while retaining the memory of what the structure once served.
Our process for heritage conservation follows a rigorous sequence:
- Existing Site Audit: We map structural members and assess the health of existing walls.
- Context-Sensitive Strategy: We analyze how the original building interacted with its climate, such as sun paths and wind direction, and ensure our interventions enhance these natural advantages.
- Material Continuity: We source hyper-local materials that match the original palette, ensuring that new additions feel like a natural evolution rather than an afterthought.
If you have a heritage structure that needs a new purpose, or an older building you wish to revitalize, we are here to help you chart that journey.
