Cultural Narratives and Thematic Art Collections
Stories do not just live in books. I catch the quiet traditions of India—the Kathakali gaze, the Coonoor hills, the Kerala monsoon—and translate them into tangible visual art for your walls.
A hand-painted circular canvas depicting a Kathakali dancer, capturing the 'Adbhutam' (wonder) expression. This piece is part of a series celebrating the nine 'Navarasas' or emotions of classical Indian dance.
A video showcasing a series of hand-painted artworks featuring birds of Coonoor, from vibrant red finches to majestic pheasants. Each painting captures the unique beauty of the wildlife in the Nilgiri hills.
Hand-painted floral motifs inspired by traditional Indian design, created for a serene prayer room. The artwork adds a sense of handcrafted elegance and spiritual calm to the sacred space.
A pen and ink style digital sketch of Jew Town in Fort Kochi. This illustration captures the nostalgic atmosphere of the narrow lanes, historic architecture, and tangled wires of this unique neighborhood.
A commissioned painting of two blue jays on a branch, set against a square of shimmering gold leaf. The contrast between the detailed birds and the modern, graphic background creates a striking visual.
A hallway featuring a series of my traditional hand-painted motif panels. The artwork creates a beautiful rhythm along the corridor, blending seamlessly with the classic Indian interior design elements.
Delicate, hand-painted gold motifs on a bedroom wall, adding a touch of traditional artistry and elegance. Each brushstroke tells a story, crafting a unique and personalized atmosphere.
A video glimpse into the making of a traditional art installation for a restaurant, featuring draped Paithani sarees, vintage Marathi film posters, and paintings that celebrate the culture of Maharashtra.
A digital sketch of the iconic Chinese Fishing Nets in Kochi. This illustration captures the massive wooden structures and traditional boats that are a symbol of the region's history and connection to the sea.
A sketch of the Old Harbour Hotel in Fort Cochin, a 300-year-old heritage building. This piece is part of my 'Kochi Walks' series, an ode to the city's historic monuments and unique architecture.
About Cultural Narratives: Thematic Collections
When you commission a cultural narrative, I do not just paint a motif; I study the context. For the Kathakali portraits you see here, I spent time researching the specific mudras and the psychology behind the navarasas to ensure the final piece feels like a living expression rather than a simple pattern. Whether it is a traditional Kathakali face or a delicate floral motif for your prayer room, my process involves translating the weight of the subject into a surface that feels respectful and grounded in the history of the art form.
Art is a way of preserving what we might otherwise lose to time. My work with cultural narratives stems from a need to hold onto the specificities of a place or a tradition. When I work on projects like the Kathakali series for the Taj Gateway or the sketches of Fort Kochi, the goal is to capture the atmosphere—the humidity of the coast, the vibrancy of the dance, or the quietude of the Nilgiri hills.
How I approach cultural themes
- Research First: Before the brush touches the canvas, I immerse myself in the subject. This includes understanding the symbolism behind Kerala's dance forms or the specific architectural history of heritage monuments in Jew Town.
- Materiality: I choose materials that honor the story. This might mean using heavy-body acrylics for a bold, modern interpretation of a traditional figure, or using ink on paper to capture the intricate, tangled wires and history of a heritage neighborhood.
- Adaptation: A cultural motif in an office space needs to function differently than one in a home. I adjust the scale, the color palette, and the level of detail so the art interacts with the room's energy without overpowering it.
Whether you are looking for a singular statement piece or a series of framed works to connect different rooms in your home, I approach each commission as a new story to tell. We can work together to find the right balance of tradition and modern aesthetics.
