Indie dogs are intelligent, tough, and perfectly adapted to our climate. I focus on building their confidence and manners so they can be the calm, reliable companions they are meant to be.

Here are five reasons why Indie dogs are perfect for Indian homes. They are low maintenance, have great immunity, are smart, and are incredibly loyal. They just need a home to give you their world in return.

The adventures of puppy Nico. Even with genetic issues, this little Indie is learning to be confident and playful. This session ended on a great note with him choosing to go through the agility tunnel.

A 5-star review from the owner of Astro, a German Shepherd. This level of satisfaction is what I aim for with every client, regardless of their dog's breed. *Note: Cross-listed for context, but primarily about GSD.*

About The Indie Project: Champions of the Street

Many Indies carry trauma or strong survival instincts from the streets, which can look like reactivity or fear in a home environment. I do not treat them like fragile pets. I use balanced training to set clear boundaries and build trust, helping them transition from a state of survival to a life of calm companionship.

Why Indies Need a Different Approach

I have trained thousands of Indies. They are not like designer breeds that have been bred for specific tasks for centuries. Indies are survivors. They are highly intelligent, quick learners, and they have excellent immune systems, but they also have a sharp 'self-preservation' mode.

When an Indie acts out, it is rarely just 'bad behavior.' Often, it is a response to the environment. That barking at the gate? It might be territorial instinct. The pulling on the leash? It might be a lack of structure in their routine. My goal is to work with these natural traits rather than suppressing them.

The Training Process

My approach for Indies focuses on three pillars:

  • Confidence Building: Using controlled exposure and agility obstacles to help fearful dogs navigate the world without reacting.
  • Impulse Control: Teaching them that they do not need to react to every trigger, be it another dog, a cat, or a person passing by.
  • Owner Education: The handover is the most important part. I train you, not just the dog. If you do not know how to handle the dog when the leash is off, the training will fail. I teach you the body language and the tone required to maintain the results we achieve in our residential program.

Real Change

Look at puppy Nico. He was terrified of the agility tunnel initially. He would not even go near it. We did not force him. We used play, patience, and a bit of motivation. By the end of the session, he was running through it. That is the potential of the Indie dog. They are eager to please, and when they understand what you want, they are some of the most loyal companions you can ever have.
