About A Closer Look: The Art of Embroidery
The depth you see in these photos comes from layering different techniques. We do not just rely on one style; I mix French knots, katdana, and 3D florals to give the embroidery texture. When we meet at my HSR Layout studio, we will decide if your saree needs a heavy, full-coverage back or if a focused, linear sleeve border will better complement the overall drape of your fabric.
My design process is centered on the weight and movement of the fabric. Whether we are working on a piece for a Muhurtham or a light party wear blouse, the embroidery density must match the occasion.
The Technique Behind the Texture
I approach every garment as a canvas for storytelling.
- Zardosi & Katdana: These provide the base for traditional motifs. I use antique gold and silver materials to ensure the work has a subtle, regal shine rather than a harsh glimmer.
- French Knots & 3D Work: These are essential for adding volume. By building up motifs like peacocks or temple architecture, we create a piece that looks different from every angle.
- Linear Borders: Sometimes, a heavy back is not the right choice for a lightweight tissue or georgette saree. In those cases, I focus the artistry on the sleeves and neckline to balance the look.
Matching Style to Event
When you visit me in HSR Layout, we look at the specific narrative you want to convey. If it is a bridal piece, we might include heavy narration scenes. For a reception or sangeet, I often suggest using sequins and pearls to ensure the blouse catches the light during evening events. Every stitch is placed by hand, ensuring the final result is comfortable to wear while making a statement.
