Meet Roopa Math and The Bangalore Tango Academy
Tango is a conversation, not a performance. I am Roopa, and after 20 years of dancing and teaching, I am here to help you move with confidence and find your own rhythm.
With 20 years of experience dancing and teaching Tango, Salsa, and other Latin styles, my approach is to blend technical precision with intimate connection. I am here to guide you step by step on your dance journey.
It was an honor to be featured in the Deccan Chronicle. The article discusses my journey from Bangalore to Buenos Aires and my mission to build a passionate Tango community right here in India.
This feature in the Deccan Chronicle highlights the 7th anniversary of my Bangalore Tango Academy and the special workshops and events we host across the city to spread the joy of this expressive dance form.
About About Me & Press Features
People often ask if my engineering background helps my teaching. It absolutely does. I do not just ask you to follow me. I break down the mechanics of the movement—the shift in weight, the geometry of the embrace—into a system I call TangoShastra. This takes the mystery out of the dance, so even if you have never danced before, you will understand exactly how to move with your partner.
From Engineering to Argentine Tango
I spent years as an embedded software engineer, but the pull of the dance floor was stronger. After training in Buenos Aires and getting hooked at my first Milonga, I realized that Tango was not about performing for a crowd. It is about a silent, intimate connection between two people. That is what I brought back home to start the Bangalore Tango Academy.
The TangoShastra Method
I do not believe in the 'just follow me' style of teaching. That is why I developed the TangoShastra method. It is a scientific, step-by-step manual for rhythm and technique. Whether we are working on posture correction, the mechanics of a giro, or how to navigate a floor, I explain the 'why' behind the 'what.' This approach allows you to build real skills rather than just memorizing a routine.
More Than a Dance School
Being featured in the Deccan Chronicle was a wonderful validation of our work, but my true pride lies in the community we have built here in Bangalore. We host regular Milonga social events, workshops, and intimate sessions that welcome everyone. You do not need a partner, fancy shoes, or any prior experience to walk into my studio. You just need curiosity. My goal is to help you feel confident enough to dance anywhere, not just on a stage.
