My Approach to Nature-Inspired Architecture
Architecture is a dialogue between built forms and the natural environment. My design process is rooted in the balance of Earth, Air, Water, Fire, and Sky.
In this video, I explain my core design philosophy. My work is deeply connected to the five elements of nature. No design feels complete without them, and by integrating these principles, I ensure my projects are not just visually appealing but are also aligned with nature.
Natural light is a key ingredient in every project. It does more than enhance aesthetics; it has a profound impact on our body and soul. Here, I discuss why designing with ample natural light is crucial for creating spaces that keep people positive, happy, and connected to the world.
Sustainability is at the heart of my design philosophy. This video shows how we turn yesterday's scrap into today's masterpieces, from a boat filled with old pottery to furniture made from reclaimed wood. It's about giving old materials new life and new beauty.
A core belief of mine: "Design is not just what it looks like, but how it feels to walk through." I create experiences, crafting spaces that tell a story and move you as you journey through them.
"Architecture is the learned game, correct & magnificent, of forms assembled in the light." This quote captures my focus on the interplay between structure and illumination. For me, design is a thoughtful dialogue between solid forms and the light that reveals them.
"Architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearn for timelessness." I strive to design spaces that are relevant to contemporary life while possessing an enduring elegance that will last for generations.
"Nature at the core." I believe true luxury is rooted in raw, natural elegance. My work blends this with a commitment to sustainability to create timeless, harmonious spaces where design and nature coexist beautifully.
"Architecture should be a dialogue with the environment, not a monologue of concrete & steel." True design listens to the land and answers with grace. My structures are a gentle response to the earth's unique narrative.
"Architecture is a visual art, with buildings that communicate their essence on their own." I believe that the best buildings don't need an explanation; their forms, materials, and the way they hold light tell their own powerful stories.
"As architects, we dream of designs and then bring those dreams to life for our clients to live in." This is the essence of my profession: transforming imagination into tangible, meaningful spaces for people.
About My Design Philosophy
People often ask why I prefer exposed concrete or rough stone over mass-market finishes. It is because these materials age with grace, telling a story of time rather than hiding it. When I design a space, I am not just drawing walls; I am calculating the path of the sun to ensure that, by late afternoon, your living room requires zero artificial light. My work is about creating a habitat that behaves like a living organism.
Architecture as a Living Dialogue
My studio, Atrey & Associates, functions less like a construction firm and more like an artist's lab. We believe that a building should not be a monologue of concrete and steel, but a participant in the environment.
The Five Elements
Every project is guided by the core elements: Earth, Air, Water, Fire, and Sky.
- Earth: We use exposed concrete, raw stone, and reclaimed wood. These materials offer tactile honesty; they possess a weight and texture that refined surfaces simply cannot replicate.
- Air & Water: Through the integration of internal courtyards and water bodies, we create breathing structures. This isn't just about aesthetics; it is about passive cooling and creating a micro-climate that makes the indoors feel like an extension of the outdoors.
- Fire & Sky (Light): Natural light is our primary tool for defining space. We design fenestrations to track the sun, ensuring that artificial lighting is merely an accessory, not a necessity. When the light hits a wall, the texture of the material becomes the art.
Designing Your Story
Whether we are designing a luxury villa in Delhi or a boutique showroom, our philosophy remains consistent. We start by listening to the site. If the ground is uneven, we do not flatten it; we build with it. If there is an existing tree, we weave the roof around it. My goal is to help you build your सपनों का घर (dream house) in a way that feels timeless.
Architecture should speak of its time, but it should also yearn for longevity. By focusing on sustainability through sun-path analysis and local materials, we build spaces that do not just look good today, but age beautifully alongside you.
Arun Sharma
I am Arun Sharma. I don't see architecture as just walls and roofs, but as a living space that breathes. My father was an architect, and I've spent my life watching how buildings evolve alongside their inhabitants. Every site is a canvas, and my goal is to build your सपनों का घर (dream house) in total harmony with nature.
