Tribal & Folk Art Painting Workshops
Learn the storytelling of Gond dots or Madhubani lines directly from master artisans. We bring these ancient traditions to life in workshops where you paint your own piece of Indian history.
B for Bhil Art. This traditional art from Madhya Pradesh uses a language of dots to tell stories of nature, gods, and daily life. We are fascinated by its similarity to Australian Aboriginal art and love sharing its intricate beauty.
M for Madhubani. Originating from the Mithila region of Bihar, this art form is a window into a vibrant culture. Traditionally painted on walls, it depicts scenes from mythology and life with bold colors and stylized figures.
F for Fabric Painting. We see fabric as a wearable canvas. Many traditional Indian art forms, like the Kalamkari shown here, have been adapted to textiles, allowing you to wear a masterpiece and carry a story with you.
We are partial to the incredible detail and storytelling in India's folk and tribal arts. Can you guess the art forms shown here? These are some of our personal favorites, created by the master karigars we work with.
Explore the rich visual language of India's tribal arts. This poster is for our Gond Painting workshop, where you can learn the distinctive patterns and storytelling techniques of this beautiful art form directly from a skilled karigar.
Immerse yourself in the world of Bhil painting, a tribal art form known for its vibrant, dotted patterns depicting nature and mythology. This workshop is a wonderful way to connect with traditional storytelling through art.
About The Art of Indian Painting: Tribal & Folk Traditions
In these sessions, you are not just learning to paint, you are decoding the patterns used by tribal communities for generations. Whether it is the rhythmic dots of Bhil art or the narrative strokes of Madhubani, you leave with a finished piece and a deeper connection to the lineage of the craft.
We believe that art is a language. When we bring master karigars from Bihar or Madhya Pradesh to Bengaluru, it is to bridge the gap between their heritage and your weekend. You might find yourself mastering the intricate geometry of Madhubani, where every line tells a mythological story, or exploring the dotted code of Bhil art. These are not simplified versions, we teach the actual techniques passed down through generations.
What to Expect
Our sessions typically run for 45 to 60 minutes and focus on practical application. You do not need prior experience. We provide all the base materials, whether it is a canvas tote bag, a terracotta plate, or high-quality drawing paper. You get to keep your creation at the end of the session, which serves as a reminder of the time you spent away from screens.
Why Tribal Art
Tribal and folk painting is more than just decoration. Gond paintings, for example, rely on small dots and dashes to create vibrant representations of nature. Madhubani relies on bold colors and stylized figures to depict daily life and mythology. By learning these styles, you gain insight into how different communities in India have documented their world for centuries.
We host these workshops across various locations in Bengaluru, from Jayamahal Palace to Freedom Park. Our goal is to ensure the artisan is recognized for their skill while you enjoy the meditative benefits of handwork.
