Hand-Drawn Family and Group Portraits
Bringing your family together in one frame. Even if you do not have a perfect group photo, I can merge your favorite memories into a single, detailed pencil sketch.
This is how a composite portrait begins. I took three separate photos of this family to create a single, unified piece of art. This process allows me to bring everyone together, no matter the original pictures.
A look at the layering process for the 75-hour family portrait. I work on each face individually, ensuring their expressions are captured perfectly before blending them into a seamless group composition.
My studio setup for the large A1 size family portrait. You can see the initial faces taking shape on my drawing board, with the reference photos close by for constant comparison.
The pure, unfiltered reaction of a child seeing his family in a sketch is priceless. He gently touches the portrait, connecting with the memory I helped bring to life.
A mother and son sharing a quiet moment looking at their new family portrait. These are the connections I strive to create with my art.
The unboxing of a mother and son portrait. It’s a special moment when the wrapping paper comes off and the art is revealed for the first time.
The finished mother and son portrait, drawn with graphite and charcoal on A3 size paper. This piece took 27 hours to complete, focusing on their close bond and happy expressions.
About this collection
Getting everyone in one photo is almost impossible. I solve this by combining people from separate images into one unified portrait. Whether you have an old photo of a loved one who is no longer with us or just separate shots of your kids, I map out their features to make them look like they were always together in that single moment. It takes time, but it works.
When you have a family photo where everyone is looking at the camera, it is rare. Often, we have one person from a birthday, another from a trip, and someone else who is missing from the frame. My work is about bridging that gap. I use graphite and charcoal to blend these separate moments into a single, cohesive composition.
The process starts with how we choose your reference photos. If you have old or low-resolution images, I work on the details, correcting the lighting and shading so the final output looks sharp. I use heavy 300gsm Ivory or Strathmore paper because these pieces are meant to last for generations. Each family sketch is a deep dive, requiring anywhere from 40 to 75 hours of work. I use a hybrid technique, blending Staedtler graphite for smooth skin tones with Camlin charcoal for deep, rich blacks.
Once the sketch is done, I apply a professional fixative spray to keep it safe. It is not just about the drawing; it is about the emotion. Seeing a family touch their finished portrait for the first time is why I do this. Whether you want to honor a loved one with a memorial tribute or simply have a group photo that finally includes everyone, I am here to help. If you have a specific vision or want to include elements like specific rooms or nature scenes in the background, we can plan that too.
