Creative Interpretations of Heritage Architecture
We blend historical context with contemporary living, turning local heritage into functional, modern spaces through a design dialogue.
For the Appaswamy Arcus boutique apartments in Chennai, we studied the surrounding historic architecture to inform our design. The project uses symbolic arches and a distinctive form to create a modern building that respectfully converses with its heritage-rich environment.
About this collection
In projects like the Appaswamy Arcus apartments, we used catenary arches to bridge history and function. These forms serve a dual purpose, as the large arches define communal gathering areas while the smaller ones guide movement through the space. This approach shows how specific structural choices can make a modern building feel deeply rooted in its surroundings without resorting to simple imitation of the past.
Our Approach to Heritage
For us, heritage is not a static object to be put behind glass. It is a live conversation. When we take on a project, whether it is a heritage-rich apartment block in Chennai or an industrial site like the Reshamkhana silk factory in Srinagar, our goal is to find the story the existing structure is already telling.
Why Context Matters
Design problems often become opportunities when you look at the site's history and constraints. In our feasibility audits, we look beyond the surface. We map distress signals like cracks or dampness while analyzing structural capacity. This allows us to determine what can be saved and what needs modern surgical intervention.
The Technical Side
We focus on these key areas during interpretation:
- Structural Retrofitting: Using steel or reinforced concrete to support new layouts without erasing the building's soul.
- Material Conservation: Rescuing original bricks and timber rafters to keep the material history alive within the new design.
- Passive Climate Design: Restoring traditional ventilation methods like courtyards to reduce reliance on artificial cooling, which is often more sustainable than modern HVAC systems.
We provide a range of services from pre-design feasibility reports to full restoration consultancy. If you are sitting on an old property or a site with historical context, we are here to discuss how to make it functional for the next fifty years.
Architecture Dialogue
We are Architecture Dialogue. We do not just restore buildings, we keep the conversation between the past and present going. Whether it is a new apartment block or an old factory, we find the design that fits the story of the place.
