Mastering Floor and Vault Gymnastics
Every big flip starts with the basics. We build powerful tumbling and vaulting skills from the ground up, focusing on technique and safety before we ever go for the big moves.
A clean round-off back handspring is a fundamental building block for advanced tumbling. We practice this combination on the tumble track to perfect the speed and form.
This video shows a gymnast working on her round-off back handspring connection. Notice the focus on a quick, powerful transition from the round-off into the handspring.
The side aerial is a beautiful floor skill that requires precision and control. Here, a gymnast practices her aerial, focusing on lifting her hips and maintaining a straight line.
This is a 'Snap Back tuck' progression drill. By using the block, the gymnast can focus on snapping her body down from a handstand to generate the power for a back tuck.
This is a drill for the Tsukahara vault, an advanced skill we build towards. We start with a powerful run and a round-off entry onto the mats, focusing on body position and control before taking it to the vaulting table.
Hands-on coaching is key to building solid technique. Here, I'm spotting a gymnast through her floor pass, ensuring she develops the correct form and muscle memory for a powerful round-off.
About Mastering the Floor & Vault
We don't throw kids into a double backflip on day one. We use the 'Snap Back' drill on blocks and tumble tracks to isolate the body mechanics, ensuring they understand the power behind the movement before they ever try it on the sprung floor.
Floor is where the personality shows, but it is also where technique gets tested. If your power is off in the round-off, your back handspring loses momentum. We fix these tiny gaps in the chain so the whole pass looks clean and competitive. It is about consistency, not just luck.
For vaulting, we work extensively on the approach. A Tsukahara starts with a solid run and a controlled hurdle. We use foam pits and spotting blocks to let gymnasts practice that difficult rotation with zero risk of injury. This approach allows them to commit to the skill without fear of landing wrong, which is half the battle in competitive gymnastics.
Everything we do here is mapped to competitive standards like the ISSO Nationals. We do not just teach a skill; we teach how to stick the landing so the judges have no room to take points off. Whether it is refining the side aerial or perfecting the handstand, our focus is on building the strength and mental toughness needed to perform under pressure.
