About Spiritual Sanctuaries
Capturing the energy in crowded, spiritually charged environments is about timing, not setup. Whether I am shooting the massive fireworks at Kedarnath or the rhythmic flow of a Maha Aarti in Kanpur, I avoid stiff, posed shots that kill the vibe. I keep my gear minimal—usually just my Sony A7IV and a fast lens—so I can blend into the crowd, move with the flow of devotees, and get those clean, honest frames without being a distraction.
Photography with a Purpose
For me, shooting at spiritual sanctuaries isn't just about documenting architecture. It's about catching the connection between the place, the light, and the people. Whether it's the golden hour hitting the dome at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib or the smoke from diyas during an aarti in Bithoor, I look for moments that feel real.
Handling the Technicals
- Low Light: Evening aartis and night temple visits are notoriously difficult to shoot. I rely on full-frame sensors and fast glass to keep images sharp without using distracting flashes. I want the glow of the lamps to be the hero, not my equipment.
- Perspective: For expansive temple complexes, I use my DJI drone to get establishing shots from above. It helps show the scale of the architecture against the landscape, like the mountains around Kedarnath or the ghats near rivers.
- Authenticity: I don't ask priests or devotees to 'act'. I document what's happening. If you are hiring me for an event or a documentary project at a sacred site, you get someone who understands how to respect the space while getting the shot.
Let's Plan Your Shoot
I am comfortable working in remote, high-altitude conditions or busy urban temples. If you have a project in mind, let’s discuss the logistics early. I prefer scouting the location a day before to understand the crowd patterns and the best lighting spots, ensuring we get the best result without any 'bawal' on the day of the shoot.
Looking for a different kind of shoot?
Tell me what you're planning, and I'll see if I can help capture it.
