About The Soul of Banaras
When shooting on the Ganga, the best light is early morning, just as the sun hits the ghats. We will need to work around the boat traffic and morning Aarti timing to ensure we get those wide, cinematic shots without too many people in the background.
Banaras is not just a location for me; it is a living, breathing subject. My approach to photographing these ghats is about finding the balance between the intense, chaotic energy of the city and the absolute stillness that exists on the water at dawn.
Why the Timing Matters
The light on the Ganga shifts drastically throughout the day. For that signature 'Golden Hour' look, we start our boat shoots at sunrise. This is when the river mist is softest and the stone steps of the ghats glow with a natural, warm texture. Mid-day light in Varanasi is harsh; if we are shooting in the afternoon, we focus on the narrow, shaded lanes of the city or use the shadows to create high-contrast, artistic portraits.
The Logistics of a Ghat Shoot
- Boat Selection: We use local rowboats, which give us the flexibility to move closer to or further from the main action at Manikarnika or Dashashwamedh ghats.
- Crowd Management: Varanasi is a busy city. If you want a shot that looks like you are the only two people in Kashi, we prioritize the early morning hours before the day tourists arrive.
- Dev Diwali & Festivals: If you are planning a shoot during Dev Diwali, the city becomes significantly more crowded. We plan these sessions well in advance, focusing on the specific ghats that offer the best view of the diya displays while keeping our footprint small so we can move quickly.
Whether you are here for a pre-wedding story or a solo creative portrait, I look for the moments that feel real. I am not here to pose you stiffly; I am here to catch the way the light hits your face against the ancient backdrop of the city.
