From the fire-lit banks of Kashi to the quiet dawn prayers of Chhath, I document the raw faith and spirit of India’s most enduring traditions.

A woman's intense gaze during the Chhath Mahaparv festival in Delhi, her face marked with the sacred sindoor. The low light of the diyas highlights the deep personal connection of the ritual.

Even a downpour in Varanasi cannot stop the Ganga Aarti. This video shows the unshakeable devotion of the priests and the crowd, a testament to faith that endures any storm.

Close up shots of the Ganga Aarti ceremony in Banaras. The video captures the synchronized movements of the priests as they offer fire, incense, and sound to the holy river.

An aerial night view of the Ganga Aarti, showing the ghats packed with devotees and the river filled with boats. The entire scene glows, creating a symphony of light and spirit.

A black and white photograph of the Ganga Aarti, stripping the ceremony down to its essential elements of fire, smoke, and form. This dramatic lighting emphasizes the spiritual power of the ritual.

The innocent smile of a child dressed as Lord Shiva on the ghats of Banaras. It's a reminder of the divine spark I seek to find in every face I photograph.

A young boy, his face painted with ash and color, smiles amidst the crowd in Varanasi. Children are an integral part of these ancient traditions, their joy adding another layer to the city's spiritual fabric.

Devotees stand waist-deep in the water, offering prayers to the rising sun during Chhath Mahaparv in Bihar. The composition highlights the communal yet deeply personal nature of the worship.

Three women in colorful sarees create a striking visual as they pray in the water against the deep blue of the pre-dawn sky during Chhath.

Two women offer prayers with their 'soop' filled with fruits and offerings for the Sun God. This shot details the specific rituals and materials central to the Chhath festival.

About Sacred Rituals: The Ganga & Beyond

I don’t use flash or artificial setups during these ceremonies. I rely on fast prime lenses that pull in whatever light is available—be it the flickering of a diya or the grey light of a Chhath dawn—to ensure the atmosphere remains authentic.

Photography in the middle of a massive ritual is less about equipment and more about movement. I focus on being invisible, positioning myself to catch the decisive moment without interrupting the devotee's prayer. Whether it is the rhythmic movement of the priests during Ganga Aarti in Varanasi or the collective energy of Chhath Puja in Bihar, my approach stays the same: candid, raw, and unposed. I use a combination of low-light mirrorless cameras and drone perspectives to show both the intimate, personal side of worship and the scale of the gathering. Because these festivals happen in unpredictable conditions—like rain or crowded ghats—my gear is chosen for reliability and speed. If you are looking for staged portraits, this is not that. If you want a visual archive of a tradition or a ceremony, that is what I do.

Hi, I’m Sushant. I chase stories—Holi colours, Chhath prayers, and foggy mornings on the ghats. I just want to show you what I see, capturing the humanism in a single frame.
