Aayana Yoga Philosophy: Meaningful Practice Beyond Poses
Yoga is a journey of self-discovery, not just a physical workout. Explore the principles that guide our practice, where we prioritize your personal rhythm over rigid perfection.
A message from our founder, Regeesh, on International Yoga Day. He shares his perspective that yoga is a journey toward the expression of the Self, a path to discovering who you are truly meant to be.
A thought from our founder, Regeesh Vattakandy. Yoga helps us develop the awareness to distinguish our real struggles from the unnecessary battles we often create for ourselves.
A short reflection from Regeesh on the nature of discipline. He reminds us that any practice forced upon the mind that is not in alignment with your true self can be harmful. Mindfulness is key.
About The Aayana Philosophy
At Aayana, we often discuss the distinction between a real challenge and an unnecessary battle. In our sessions, we help you identify where you might be forcing a pose or a discipline that does not align with your natural rhythm. Whether you are joining us for a Varkala retreat or a daily class, we focus on helping you find a practice that actually fits your life, rather than one you feel you have to endure.
Moving Beyond the Pose
Many students come to us feeling like they are fighting their own bodies. They view yoga as a series of goals to be conquered—a 'human pretzel' checklist. Our philosophy is the opposite. We believe yoga is about removing the layers of heaviness we accumulate, not adding more pressure.
Our Approach to Practice
Whether you are practicing Hatha, Vinyasa, or Yin, the goal remains the same: self-awareness. We use movement to strip away the noise.
- Discipline vs. Alignment: We teach that any discipline forced on the mind which is not in alignment with your true self is counterproductive. We help you find the 'middle way' where your practice challenges you without causing harm.
- Mindfulness in Motion: Our classes aren't just about flexibility. We integrate sound healing, breathwork, and conscious connected breathing to ensure you leave the mat feeling lighter than when you stepped on.
- Community as a Catalyst: We see the 'Aayana Family' as a safe space. When you learn alongside others in our Varkala shala or online, you realize your struggles—the wobbly poses, the distracted mind—are shared. This realization is often the first step toward genuine healing.
Why This Matters
If you have ever felt burnout from a rigid fitness routine, our approach might be a breath of fresh air. We encourage you to observe your mental state as much as your posture. By focusing on how you feel during the practice, you start to carry that lightness into your daily life, long after you roll up your mat.
Aayana Yoga
I am Regeesh, and after 12 years of teaching in Bangalore and Varkala, I have learned that your yoga practice should not feel like a chore. I want to help you find that natural lightness, whether that is through a simple breathwork session or a week-long retreat by the sea.
