Movies, music, and television shows provide the framework for these writing exercises. We use these familiar worlds as creative triggers to help you break through blocks and find your own narrative voice.

Inspired by the gentle melancholy of Studio Ghibli, this session's theme was "Goodbye." We explored the many facets of farewells in our writing, from the bittersweet to the tragic, using the quiet emotionality of films like 'My Neighbor Totoro' as a guide.

This session took us to the deserts of Albuquerque as we were "Breaking Down the Bad." We analyzed the character arcs and moral complexities of the iconic TV show 'Breaking Bad' to inspire our own stories of transformation and consequence.

Can you write a story that balances absurdity with genuine emotional depth? Using the animated show 'Bojack Horseman' as a touchstone, this session explored the theme of "Absurd World, Real Pain."

Inspired by Kendrick Lamar's masterpiece album, this session's theme was "Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst." We used the album's powerful narrative and lyrical depth as a springboard for writing stories about legacy, mortality, and the need to be heard.

"Lights. Camera. ACTION!!" This high-energy session was inspired by iconic action movies like 'The Matrix'. We focused on writing dynamic, visceral, and visually exciting action sequences that leap off the page.

A powerful ending can make a story unforgettable. We studied the poignant and controversial ending of the movie 'Atonement' to discuss and write our own impactful, and sometimes tragic, story conclusions.

"Controller Two Detected." This session was for the gamers in our club. We used the language and concepts of cooperative video games as prompts for stories about partnership, conflict, and shared objectives.

With great power comes great... well, you know the rest. This session, inspired by comic book lore from Spider-Man to The Punisher, explored themes of power, responsibility, and the moral complexities of being a hero.

We took writing lessons from the masterful film 'Hazaaron Khwahisein Aisi'. The session focused on how to weave personal stories into a larger political and historical backdrop, creating fiction that is both intimate and epic.

We explored the myth of Sisyphus in our modern lives. This philosophical prompt challenged us to write about the repetitive struggles, mundane tasks, and the search for meaning in our everyday routines.

About Pop Culture Prompts

You are not here to discuss film theory or critique albums. You are here to write. In these sessions, we use a specific pop culture element as a constraint—a set of rules or a mood—to fuel a 40-minute timed writing sprint. It is the most effective way to stop overthinking and start producing pages, especially when you have a supportive group waiting to hear what you have created.

Whether we are analyzing the moral ambiguity of 'Breaking Bad', the rhythmic storytelling of Kendrick Lamar, or the visual poetry of Studio Ghibli, our prompts are designed to bypass the blank page syndrome. By borrowing established characters or settings, you get to focus purely on the mechanics of writing: dialogue, pacing, and emotional arcs.

What to expect

  • Structured Inspiration: Every Saturday, a host brings a theme inspired by a movie, show, or song.
  • The Sprint: We dedicate 40 minutes to pure, silent writing. There are no distractions, just you and your notebook.
  • The Feedback Loop: If you feel comfortable, you can read your piece aloud. We offer honest, constructive reactions in a space that prioritizes kindness over harsh critique.
  • Community: We meet on the terrace at Sana Plaza, near Trinity Metro. It is an informal, open-air setting. After the session, the conversation usually shifts to coffee and more casual storytelling.

This is not a lecture series. It is a collective sandbox for writers of all levels, from beginners to experienced hobbyists. You only need a pen, a notebook, and an open mind.
