Behind the Scenes Photography in Mumbai
A quiet look into how I create images. It is not just about the final shot, but the energy, the light, and the patience required to find the right frame.
In the zone, finding the right angle and light. This is a candid moment of focus during a portrait session, where I am completely absorbed in the process of crafting the image through the lens.
A moment of concentration on set. My process involves being fully present, observing the light and my subject to capture the most authentic and compelling shot.
Another angle from a studio session, showing how I position myself to get the perfect shot. Every shoot is a physical process of moving and adapting to find the best perspective.
About Behind the Scenes: My Creative Process
I do not rely on the latest gadgets. On set, whether for a campaign or a student workshop in my Andheri West studio, I stick to the same Canon 5D Mark III I bought 13 years ago. It is about the light and the connection with the subject, not the hardware. If you see me moving furniture or adjusting a reflector, it is because the scene dictates the mood, not a pre-planned script.
My Approach to a Shoot
Photography is often rushed, but I find that the best work happens when you slow down. When I am behind the camera, I am not thinking about filters or new software. I am thinking about the fabric, the texture, and how the light behaves in that specific moment. My process involves being fully present, which is why I often rearrange the physical space of a set, from fixing the angle of a bed to adjusting simple household objects, to get the right composition.
Teaching the Process
Many of my students come to me asking for a 'formula' for the perfect shot. In my workshops, I try to dismantle that idea. We work on 10 specific lighting setups using standard modifiers like softboxes and beauty dishes, but the goal is to understand why a shadow falls a certain way, not just where to place the light. Whether you are interested in:
- Natural Light Portraits: Using Mumbai's soft afternoon light to create raw, honest skin textures.
- Commercial Lookbooks: Building a clean, professional aesthetic without over-editing.
- Lighting Control: Moving from flat, lifeless images to photos with depth and harmony.
Why Keep it Minimal?
My retouching workflow is designed to be invisible. We focus on Frequency Separation and Dodge & Burn, but only to enhance what is already there. You will not find heavy-handed edits in my portfolio or in the techniques I teach. I believe that if you get the lighting and the direction right on set, the post-production work becomes minimal and organic.
