We turned a 1,200 sq. ft. site with awkward angles into a cozy Himalayan-inspired café-bar, proving that structural constraints are often just the start of a story.

Every project begins with a story, often as a simple line on paper. This initial sketch for a corner at Echoes captures the vision of a warm, inviting nook with an arched window, which we later brought to life.

Here is the realized vision from the sketch. The corner at Echoes, with its rubble stone wall, classic armchair, and view of the lush greenery, perfectly bridges imagination and reality, creating a space full of character and charm.

This seating area at Echoes captures the essence of Himalayan serenity. The combination of a comfortable leather armchair, rustic stone walls, and large arched windows framing the outdoors offers a tranquil escape from the city.

The rubble-clad walls at Echoes are more than just decoration. They are a key element of our material story, grounding you in a cozy, mountain-inspired warmth from the moment you step inside and adding a rich, tactile quality to the space.

Inspired by the client's vision of a Himalayan café, we used traditional rubble walls and warm wooden interiors to bring the soul of the mountains to the city. This corner, with its arched window and eclectic furniture, feels like a cozy hilltop retreat.

Another view of the intimate seating at Echoes. The mix of bentwood chairs, a glass-topped table, and floral wallpaper against a stone arch creates a layered, maximalist aesthetic that feels both personal and curated.

We filled Echoes with lush indoor plants to enhance the connection to nature. Paired with vintage-style furniture and warm lighting, the greenery adds life and softness to the rustic interior, making the space feel like a hidden garden.

In a world of fleeting trends, Echoes is designed to feel timeless. This corner, with its aged wood, patterned cushions, and vintage lamps, evokes a slow, soulful rhythm inspired by the enduring charm of Himalayan cafés.

This view showcases the layered luxury of Echoes. The mix of textures, from the soft upholstery to the wooden window frames and lush plants, creates a rich sensory experience that invites guests to relax and connect.

About Echoes Café-Bar: A Nostalgic Himalayan Retreat

Instead of fighting the irregular layout of this 1,200 sq. ft. site, we leaned into it. By using rubble-clad walls and defined seating zones, we turned awkward corners into cozy, mountain-inspired nooks that balance the operational needs of a busy café with the quiet warmth of a Himalayan home.

When a client comes to me with a difficult site, I usually find that is where the best work happens. At Echoes, the challenge was not just the size, but the lack of straight lines. We stopped trying to make it a perfect box and instead used the structural oddities to create pockets of intimacy.

We used stone and wood to ground the design, pulling in the feeling of a mountain cabin. It is a delicate balance: the space needs to look like a home, but it needs to function like a high-traffic restaurant. We tucked the kitchen, bar, and seating in a way that staff can move easily without disturbing the quiet vibe of the dining nooks.

For anyone looking to design a similar commercial space, focus on these elements:

  • Material Integrity: We use real stone, raw wood, and metal. These materials age well and gain character, unlike synthetic finishes.
  • Zoning over Open-Planning: In smaller spaces, creating separate zones gives customers privacy and makes the venue feel larger.
  • Lighting: Avoid harsh overhead lights. We used warm, low-hanging lamps to create pools of light that define the space and make people feel comfortable.

The goal is always to create a place that makes you slow down.
