Sunrise Sets & Open-Air Grooves for Techno Events
Outdoor sets require a specific touch. I blend percussive heat and uplifting melodies to match the rhythm of the rising sun, focusing on connection rather than just the music.
An aerial view of my sunrise set at White Mist Happy Retreats. The stunning landscape provides an incredible backdrop, blending the music with the beauty of the morning.
Adjusting my headphones and getting lost in the mix as the sun climbs higher. Playing outdoors requires a different focus, tuning into the environment as much as the music.

The sun breaking over the hills at Happy Retreats. This was the view that inspired the musical direction for the entire set, a slow build of energy and light.
The party is still going strong at 10 AM in Goa. This clip captures the marathon energy of a true after-party, where the music just doesn't stop.
About Sunrise Sets & Open-Air Grooves
When playing in open-air venues, the acoustic environment is completely different from a club. I prioritize a 60-minute technical sound check, especially for sunrise sessions, to ensure the bass carries across the space without muddying the percussive layers. If you are planning an outdoor event, ask your venue about the sub-bass handling, as that is the difference between a flat set and one that keeps the energy moving throughout the morning.
The Narrative Arc of Sunrise
Unlike a standard club set, playing for the sunrise is about managing energy as the light shifts. I structure these performances as a narrative. We start with deep, atmospheric, and hypnotic sounds that sit well with the cool morning air. As the sun climbs, I slowly introduce higher-intensity techno rhythms and funk-infused grooves to wake up the crowd. It is about a gradual build that matches the environment rather than forcing the energy too early.
Hybrid Technical Setup
I treat the DJ booth like a live production station. My setup isn't just about playing tracks. I use samplers and hardware to layer textures and percussion in real time. This means I can react to the vibe of the crowd and the setting instantly. Because this requires precise gain staging and frequency balancing, I require a minimum 6-foot booth width and a dedicated technical sound check to ensure the hardware inputs are perfectly synced with your PA system.
Logistics for Outdoor Events
If you are hosting at an outdoor venue, sound bleed and bass containment are often the biggest challenges. My riders include specific requirements to help your sound engineer get the best out of the system. I also provide a consultation prior to the event to align the musical arc with your event timeline, whether you need a smooth, ambient start or a high-energy transition to peak-hour tracks. Let's discuss your site's technical specs and how we can make the sound work for your specific location.
