About Earning Your Stripes: Belt Grading Tests
Getting a new belt here isn't just about showing up, it’s a public demonstration of your discipline. You will be tested on your forms, combat precision, and ability to break boards under pressure. It is the day students prove they have moved from beginner to serious practitioner, and I ensure the standard is strictly maintained.
In Taekwondo, a belt is not just a piece of fabric, it is a record of your journey. At Tiger Taekwondo Academy in Janakpuri, we treat belt grading tests as the most important milestones for a student.
What happens during a test?
It is not just about kicking high. During these sessions, students perform:
- Poomsae (Forms): A sequence of defensive and offensive movements that show your understanding of balance, power, and rhythm.
- Kyokpa (Board Breaking): This is where you prove your technique is effective. It requires focus and commitment. If your hand or foot hits the board without true intention, it won't break.
- Sparring (Kyorugi): We observe your ability to apply combat rules, use appropriate strikes, and avoid penalties (gamjum) in a live setting.
Why it matters
I have seen students come in as shy beginners and leave these tests with a completely different level of confidence. My role as a coach is to push you, but during grading, you are on your own. It teaches students sabar (patience) and mehnat (hard work). We follow the official regulations of the Delhi Taekwondo Association, so when you earn a belt here, it means you have met a real technical standard.
If you are planning to join, remember that progress is slow and steady. We don't rush belts; we wait until the student is technically ready to represent their rank.
