Upcycled Cupboards and Almirahs: Give Your Memories a Fresh Look
Old cupboards aren’t just storage—they’re memories wrapped in wood or metal. I breathe new life into them so they can stay part of your home for years to come.
This is where the journey began for a 42-year-old metal almirah. The process started with extensive prep work, including sanding, removing old stickers, and applying multiple coats of metal primer and base paint to create a perfect canvas.
The second part of the almirah project involved adding wooden beadings for structure and then hand-painting the entire piece with a vibrant floral design. The final look is a complete departure from the original rustic metal.

For this wooden cupboard, I used a unique approach to create a modern aesthetic. The process involved applying texture paste for a wave-like pattern, followed by dry brushing and waxing to achieve this layered, artistic finish.
Here is the final look of the textured cupboard. The combination of a cool color palette and subtle gold highlights turned this simple piece into custom home decor.
This video shows the full process of transforming a small cabinet. I used stenciling with texture paste, added a cane panel, and gave it a distressed look for a vintage-inspired, aesthetic finish.
About Cupboard & Almirah Transformations
Most people think old furniture is done for when it looks beat up, but the structure is usually solid. My process starts with deep sanding and fixing, then we move to aesthetics—whether that is modern cane webbing, hand-painted florals, or texture paste to mask imperfections. Before we start, I will need clear photos of the piece so I can assess its structural integrity and let you know what is possible.
Turning the Old into the New
To me, upcycling isn't just about paint. It is about taking an almirah that has been in your family for decades and ensuring it actually fits your modern home aesthetic. Whether it is a heavy metal almirah that feels too industrial or a wooden cupboard that has lost its shine, we can change the vibe completely.
My Process
- The Assessment: We start with a chat about your story and what you want to achieve. If the piece needs heavy-duty repairs, I coordinate with skilled carpenters to handle the structure before I touch it.
- The Messy Part: Preparation is key. I do deep sanding and cleaning to remove old polish, stickers, or scratches. If it is metal, I apply specialized primer to prevent future rust.
- The Artistry: This is where we customize. We can add cane webbing for a warm, organic feel, use texture paste to create wave-like patterns, or I can hand-paint floral motifs that match your curtains or wallpaper.
- The Protection: Once the design is done, I seal everything with high-quality varnish or lacquer. This ensures that your cupboard isn't just pretty to look at but functional enough to withstand daily use.
Why Choose Upcycling?
It is eco-friendly, yes, but it is also deeply personal. You end up with a piece that is truly unique, not something factory-made from a store. Plus, you get to keep the memories attached to that furniture while making it look fresh and current. If you are worried about whether your old piece can be saved, just send me a photo and let's talk through your ideas.
