A group of students playing a cover of the classic Bollywood song "Mitwa." Learning popular songs like this makes practice enjoyable and helps you understand rhythm in a familiar context.
Part of our group session covering the song "Angaaron" from Pushpa 2. You can see the focus and enjoyment as we learn to play this trending South Indian song together.
Another angle of our "Angaaron" tabla cover. Group practice helps everyone stay in sync and builds a strong sense of rhythm and community among the students.
Can you guess the song? It's always fun to challenge my students with new rhythms from popular tracks. This session was full of energy.
Here we are jamming to the Sufi-style Punjabi song "Paon Ki Jutti." This shows how we adapt different genres, from folk to modern pop, for the tabla.
A closer look at our hands during the "Paon ki Jutti" cover. Notice how each student is focused on their technique while playing as part of the larger group.
Feeling the folk vibes with our tabla cover of Amrinder Gill's "Chal Mele Nu Chaliye." Learning Punjabi folk music is a great way to understand different regional rhythms.
A group of us playing our version of "Thagyan" from Coke Studio. We often draw inspiration from platforms like Coke Studio to explore contemporary and fusion music.
A solo tabla cover of Kailash Kher's powerful song "Toota Toota Ek Parinda." This demonstrates how a single instrument can carry the emotion and rhythm of a full song.
Our tabla cover of "Jee Ve Soniya Jee" by the Nooran Sisters. This piece is great for practicing the fast-paced and intricate rhythms found in Sufi and Punjabi folk music.
About Bollywood & Punjabi Song Covers
Forget the stiff, old-school practice. In these sessions, we take the hits you hear on the radio—whether it’s a soulful Sufi track or a high-energy item song—and break them down to their core rhythmic soul. You don't just learn the bols, you learn to jam along, finding the perfect tabla and dholak fit for every beat.
How We Jam at Rythem Home
Music is about feeling, not just following a textbook. When you walk into my studio, we ditch the formal setup for a traditional baithak-style circle. This isn't just a class; it's a family of musicians helping each other find the groove.
We start by picking a song you love—maybe a Punjabi folk classic like 'Chal Mele Nu Chaliye' or a trending Bollywood number—and we deconstruct it. We look at the 'theka' (rhythmic pattern) and figure out how the tabla or dholak can complement the melody.
What you get:
- Rhythm Mastery: We cover the basics of Keherwa and Dadra cycles, which are the backbone of most Bollywood tracks.
- Practical Application: You aren't just practicing in a vacuum. You are learning play-along techniques that you can use at weddings, parties, or just jamming with friends.
- Fusion Focus: Whether it's the Sufi energy of Qawwali or the modern pop beats you hear in Coke Studio, we adapt the traditional instrument to suit contemporary sounds.
Everything I teach comes from what I learned from my Papa ji and my gurus. We honour the roots, but we keep the music fresh. If you are ready to stop just listening to your favourite songs and start playing them, this is the place to be. Yahan dosti bhi music wali hoti hai.
