Rhythm for Life: The Taal Inc. Philosophy
We believe drumming is more than music; it is a way to connect, de-stress, and find your flow. Explore the core beliefs that drive our drum circles and training programs.
Rhythm is life. In this powerful clip, I share a Malinke proverb: "Without joy, there is no music; without music, there is no joy." This is the core belief that fuels our work.
What is rhythm to you? In my second TEDx talk, I explore this question, defining rhythm as the balance of high and low, rush and calm, the inner and the outer. It's the beat of the heart.
My guru Mamady Keïta spoke of four connections you make when you drum. I add a fifth: the connection with your inner self. The drum is a tool to tap into your subconscious potential.
I love explaining the concept of entrainment, the pendulum principle. It's a beautiful scientific phenomenon that we experience on a human level in a drum circle, proving that we are meant to synchronize.
How do we cope with stress? I explore this in my talk, referencing Master Shifu from Kung Fu Panda. Finding 'inner peace' is the goal, and rhythm is a powerful, active way to get there.
My final message in this talk is a promise: find what brings you into a state of flow. Whether it's drumming, baking, or running, open your heart and let art back into your life.
The word 'rhythm' has the sound 'hmm' in it, the universal sound. This is the start of my talk about my journey, and how I turned my passion for rhythm into my profession.
My journey led me to a Master's in Clinical Psychology, where I realized the deep therapeutic benefits of drumming. This led to the birth of Taal Inc. and my passion for research in arts and health.
Here I share some of my key learning moments. The first is about health. In a passion driven profession, especially one focused on stress reduction, taking care of your own well being is imperative.
More learning moments: the danger of overconfidence, the power of simplicity, and the importance of unity. I share an African proverb: "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together."
About The Taal Inc. Philosophy: Rhythm for Life
My background is in clinical psychology, not just music. I realized early on that rhythm is a potent, non-verbal tool to hack stress and build authentic human connection. Whether you are leading a team or navigating a personal challenge, this philosophy is about using sound as a bridge to reach a state of flow that words often fail to capture.
Rhythm as a Language
At Taal Inc., we operate on the belief that 'the djembe knows no borders.' When you step into a drum circle, you are leaving behind the noise of daily life and entering a space of entrainment. This is a scientific phenomenon, much like the pendulum principle, where different rhythms eventually synchronize. When we drum together, we aren't just making noise; we are literally aligning our heartbeats and breathing, creating a unity that is rare in our modern, disconnected lives.
Science Meets Soul
My transition from clinical psychology to professional drumming wasn't an accident. Research consistently proves the benefits of group drumming for reducing cortisol levels and fostering neuroplasticity. We focus on four key pathways: action, awareness, entrainment, and education. It is about understanding that rhythm is in speech, movement, and thought. If you can breathe, you have rhythm.
The 'Wassa Wassa' Way
We strive for 'Wassa Wassa'—a Malinke term for 'Happy Happy.' This isn't about being a professional musician. It is about the courage to show up, participate, and let art back into your life. Whether you are looking to become a certified facilitator or simply want to find your own pulse, my work is to provide the structure that allows you to feel that freedom.
