Café Coffee Day: A Modern Refresh at BEL Road
Refreshing a brand as iconic as Café Coffee Day meant balancing heritage with modern comfort. At our BEL Road project, we brought the outdoors in to create a space that feels like a natural extension of Bangalore’s cafe culture.
Outdoor seating is a quintessential part of the Bangalore experience. We designed this patio to feel like a natural extension of the cafe, framed by greenery to create a relaxed, refreshing vibe for lingering over coffee.
By opening up the glazing and surrounding the café with lush plants, we created a seamless indoor-outdoor connection. This design reflects the brand's story of connection, creating the perfect spot to unwind and connect with others.
Every detail tells a story. We paired the iconic tagline, "A lot can happen over coffee," with a textured mural honoring coffee's journey, creating a space that is modern yet rooted in the brand's heritage.
Seating at this CCD outlet is all about flexibility and comfort. We introduced a combination of plush bench seating and sleek chairs to suit every guest, whether they are there for a cozy chat or to work.
The seating arrangement combines soft textures, earthy tones, and a thoughtful layout to ensure the setting is as inviting as the coffee it serves. The brand's tagline is visible on the glass, reinforcing the atmosphere.
The outdoor seating area is separated from the street by large planters filled with tropical plants, creating a green buffer that offers a sense of escape and tranquility in the middle of the city.
A closer view of the custom mural we commissioned from a local artist. The bas-relief sculpture celebrates the coffee plant, subtly nodding to the brand’s roots in Chikkamagaluru’s plantations.
We love this soft, subtle palette of striped upholstery and warm wood against a concrete-finish wall. It holds its own character while celebrating Bangalore’s beautifully green outdoors, visible through the large window.
This cozy corner with bold, striped armchairs is perfect for quiet conversations. The minimalist pendant light provides focused illumination without distracting from the view of the greenery outside.
The outdoor area features modern, woven chairs that are both durable and stylish. The iconic tagline on the wall is visible from the outside, inviting passersby to step in.
About Café Coffee Day: Reimagining an Icon
We moved away from a strictly indoor feel by opening up the glazing and integrating lush planters as a natural barrier. This creates an outdoor seating experience that remains private and cozy, even on a busy street like BEL Road. It is about letting the cafe breathe while giving guests a quiet, green buffer from the city traffic.
The brief for this project was to honor the brand's heritage—the familiar 'A lot can happen over coffee' legacy—while updating the aesthetic for a contemporary audience. We steered clear of fleeting trends, focusing instead on layered storytelling and durability, which are essential for a high-turnover hospitality space.
The core of the design is the indoor-outdoor connection. By using extensive glazing and strategic landscaping, we blurred the boundaries between the cafe interior and the sidewalk. We installed custom bas-relief murals that depict the coffee journey, acting as a tactile backdrop that grounds the space in the brand's roots.
For seating, we opted for a mix of durable, comfortable options. You will see plush bench seating for groups, paired with sleek, ergonomic chairs for solo workers or quick chats. We used a muted, earthy palette—concrete textures, warm wood, and soft upholstery—that does not compete with the cafe’s active environment. Lighting is deliberately ambient, using focused pendant lights to create intimate zones without sacrificing the open, airy feel.
This project is a perfect example of our approach to cafe architecture in Bangalore: balancing functionality with a deep appreciation for the vibe that makes a cafe a neighborhood staple. Whether you are planning a new QSR or looking to renovate an existing space, we focus on designs that are as practical as they are welcoming.

I’m Neha, principal architect at Studio Taan. I still get that school-days Café Coffee Day nostalgia, so refreshing this specific outlet was a bit surreal for me. My team and I focus on building spaces that hold memories rather than just following a trend.
