Serene Bedrooms: Custom Bed and Headboard Designs
A bedroom should be a sanctuary for rest. I design low-profile beds and custom headboards using solid wood and natural textures to create a peaceful, meditative retreat from the city.
This son's bedroom features a custom platform bed that seamlessly connects to the study desk. This integrated design creates an uncluttered layout and makes the room feel spacious and serene.

About Serene Bedrooms: Beds & Headboards
Instead of standard bed frames, I often design island beds or integrated platform systems. By connecting the bed directly to your side tables or study desk, we eliminate clutter and create a clean, purposeful perimeter that makes the room feel significantly more spacious.
At SML Architects, my approach to bedroom design starts with the premise that rest requires visual silence. I avoid bulky, standard frames. Instead, I focus on low-profile platform beds that anchor the room without dominating it. Often, I extend the headboard to incorporate floating nightstands or even a study desk, turning the sleeping area into a singular, integrated piece of furniture.
This integration is purposeful. It creates an uncluttered layout, which is essential for maintaining a zen-like environment in a chaotic city like Mumbai.
Materials & Craft
I use honest, tactile materials. A solid teak frame might be paired with hand-woven cane or a soft, upholstered headboard in linen or cotton. For walls and headboard backdrops, I often work with lime plaster or warm wood veneers to add depth without resorting to loud patterns.
Technical Details
- Frame: Solid wood with kiln-dried internal structures to prevent warping in our coastal climate.
- Finish: Matt melamine or PU coatings that preserve the wood grain's natural texture.
- Headboard: Custom designs, ranging from channel-tufted fabric to recessed wooden panels, engineered for both comfort and aesthetic balance.
Whether you are looking for a simple island bed or a complex, wall-to-wall headboard system, my process begins with understanding how you use your space. We look at the flow, the light, and your specific storage needs, then build a piece that fits perfectly, bringing a sense of calm to the start and end of your day.
