We do not believe in erasing history. Our approach to home renovation is about reframing the existing structure to serve your modern lifestyle while keeping the soul of the original building intact.

This is the 'House Retold' project, a quiet transformation of an aged residence. This video shows the journey from a dark, enclosed staircase to a light-filled passage with expansive glass walls that open onto the garden.

The facade of House Retold, where I added a new architectural skin to a traditional structure. The design uses vertical louvers for privacy, large openings for light, and a modern material palette to give the home a completely new identity.

A quiet transformation of memory and material. This house is a reimagining of an aged residence that once stood in classical architectural style. Rather than erasing its past, the project reframes it, offering a new narrative through a clean, contemporary lens. The facade, once traditional, is now a composition of large glass openings, soft grey stone, and minimal lines that conceal the structure's original form beneath a new identity. This is not a house rebuilt, it is a house retold. Its story edited with restraint, respect, and renewed sense of clarity.

About Renovations: The Art of the Retold Home

When renovating, we prioritize mapping the existing bones of your home to identify where we can enlarge openings and improve natural light flow without compromising structural integrity. Whether it is retrofitting columns for floor-to-ceiling glazing or selecting materials that modernize dated facades, our goal is to create a seamless transition between the home you have and the one you want.

The Art of the Retold Home

Renovating a residence is rarely just about aesthetics. It is a complex process of structural retrofitting and spatial re-imagination. At SSDA, we approach every renovation project as an exercise in clarity. We look at the original layout, assess what is worth preserving, and determine how to introduce modern elements like large format glazing and steel structures without disrupting the house's inherent character.

Our Process

1. Assessment and As-Built Documentation Before we draw, we measure. We create precise drawings of your existing property to understand the structural limitations. This is essential for safe demolition planning and for determining where we can open up walls or increase window sizes.

2. Structural Retrofitting Many aged residences were not built to support the large, open spans typical of contemporary design. We collaborate with structural engineers to fortify existing columns and slabs, ensuring your home can safely support new design features like cantilevered sections or floor-to-ceiling glass.

3. Modern Facade Design We often find that a home's dated exterior is its biggest detractor. By introducing a new architectural skin, we can completely transform the identity of a house. We use materials like dry-clad stone, vertical louvers for privacy, and metal detailing to create a sleek, contemporary look that conceals the structure's original form while honoring its legacy.

4. Integration of Light and Volume Our goal is to erase the feeling of being enclosed. We replace traditional, smaller windows with massive glass openings, often reconfiguring internal partitions to improve the flow of movement. This allows natural light to become a primary design element, shifting the mood of the interiors from dark and fragmented to open and cohesive.

We treat every project as a dialogue between what was and what can be, resulting in a home that feels renewed rather than replaced.
