Soulful Bird Photography and Field Highlights
A selection of images that define my 'Sense the Light' philosophy, where observation meets technical precision. These shots from Bharatpur and Ranganathittu reflect the patience and meditative focus I teach in my workshops.
This is the essence of what I teach: patience, observation, and being ready for that one, fleeting moment. I waited for hours to witness this Oriental Darter, or snake bird, at work in Bharatpur. It demonstrates a profound lesson in concentration, letting smaller fish pass by, waiting for the perfect opportunity. The incredible speed and precision of its strike, best seen in slow motion, is a result of endless practice, a sadhana that we too can learn in our photography.
This is what I mean when I say "sense the light". We learn to see how the golden morning light can turn a simple moment, like this spot-billed pelican skimming the water at Ranganathittu, into a piece of art. The way the light catches the wings and reflects on the water creates a magical, almost divine, image.
Capturing a bird in flight is a technical challenge, but it's also about capturing its spirit. Bulbuls are said to be messengers of joy, and in this shot, you can feel the energy and grace in its wings. During my workshops, we focus on the techniques needed to freeze such dynamic moments, creating images that feel alive.
Photography for me is about telling the story of a place. This image is quintessential Bharatpur, a place I consider a Mecca for birders. Here, a painted stork, completely unmindful, saunters across the path, sharing its world with us. It’s in these quiet, serendipitous moments of coexistence that the true magic of wildlife photography reveals itself.
Freezing a moment like this Malabar Starling enjoying a bath in the Thattekad forest is pure joy. See how each water droplet is a tiny, suspended jewel. This is the result of understanding your camera and the light, allowing you to capture the textures and split-second action that the naked eye often misses.
I am Sreekumar Krishnan, and my goal is to help you make images that matter. As your creative guide, I blend technical skills with a spiritual approach to help you think differently and connect more deeply with the world you are photographing.
My "Sense the Light" workshop is an invitation to join me at Ranganathittu, Mysore. It is an immersive experience designed to elevate your skills, whether you are just starting or feel you have hit a creative wall.
I was honored to be featured in Mid-Day to discuss the annual flamingo migration in Navi Mumbai. Sharing knowledge and creating awareness about conservation and the beauty of our local ecosystems is a core part of my work as a photographer.
About Featured
These aren't just snapshots. Capturing a Darter mid-hunt or a Pelican in flight requires a specific kind of patience, a sadhana (practice) I teach in every workshop. When you're out in the field with me, we stop chasing the perfect shot and start learning how to read bird behavior, anticipate movement, and align your energy with the environment. It is the difference between clicking a button and truly seeing.
My Approach to Nature Photography
Photography is a dialogue with nature. In my 'Sense the Light' workshops, we move beyond textbook camera settings to develop an intuitive eye. Whether we are at the Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary or local wetlands, the goal is to become invisible, to be present, and to watch the wild reveal itself. You will learn to use your gear to capture action—like the strike of an Oriental Darter—without disturbing the subject.
Workshop Experience
We focus on essential field techniques: managing exposure in harsh morning light, using shutter speeds for birds in flight, and understanding bird behavior. We choose locations like Ranganathittu for their rich biodiversity, giving you access to eye-level shots from boats and blinds. It is not just about bringing back photos; it is about bringing back a new way of looking at the world.
What You Will Learn
- How to anticipate movement rather than just reacting to it.
- Technical precision in challenging light conditions.
- The ethics of wildlife photography and connecting with the environment.
- Composition techniques that turn a simple bird shot into fine art.
If you are ready to move from a casual hobbyist to a conscious photographer, join me in the field. Let's learn to listen to the stories nature is waiting to tell us.
