The Art of Bharatanatyam
Bharatanatyam is more than just steps, it is a conversation between music and movement. We embrace the Kalakshetra style, finding grace in every mudra and strength in every rhythm.
Here I am with my students, exploring the nuances of a piece set in Kedaragaula Ragam. For me, music is the breath of dance. Mastering the vocals and rhythm, as you can hear in the background, is what allows a dancer's movements to truly come alive.
This video gives you a behind the scenes look at one of my photoshoots. You can hear the jathis being recited, which provides the rhythmic structure for the Bharatanatyam poses I am demonstrating.
A graphic celebrating International Dance Day, featuring some of my signature Bharatanatyam poses. Dance is a visual representation of music, and each posture and mudra tells a story guided by the rhythm and melody.
About The Art of Bharatanatyam
In our studio, we do not separate music from dance. Before your feet learn the rhythmic jathis, your ears must learn to catch the sruthi and the subtle nuances of the ragam. This foundation is what transforms a simple sequence of movements into a performance that truly speaks.
For us, Bharatanatyam is a continuous process of saadhana. We follow the Kalakshetra style, which prioritizes clean lines, geometric precision, and an intense connection to the music. Many students come to us thinking dance is only about footwork, but we teach that without a strong grip on rhythm and melody, the dance lacks its soul.
Whether you are training in our HSR Layout studio or joining our online sessions, the focus remains the same. We take the time to refine the basics, from the way you hold a mudra to how you engage your eyes. This is not a race to finish a syllabus. It is about building the discipline required to stand on stage with confidence, just as our students do during our annual Nrithya Sandhya performances.
We welcome students of all ages. Whether you are seven or thirty-seven, it is never too late to start this journey. If you are looking for a place where tradition is respected and every student gets the attention they need to find their own dance voice, you have found your home.
