About Sitar Performances
I pour my heart into every sitar performance. For me, it's not just about playing notes - it’s about sharing the feeling, the sadhana (practice), and creating that special vibe where music becomes a real experience for everyone listening.
Performance Formats
- Solo Classical: Pure Indian classical sitar, exploring one raaga in depth, usually with a tabla. This fits formal concerts or when you want a deep, focused musical journey.
- Sitar Jugalbandi: Not a competition, more like a musical baatcheet (chat) between different instruments. I love teaming up with artists on sarod or veena, and each time, something new happens on stage.
Why Baithak Feels Different
Nothing beats the energy of a proper baithak (mehfil). In a small room or home, the music feels close, almost like it’s breathing with you. If you want a private baithak concert with serious connection and no distractions, this is it.
Exploring New Sounds
I don’t like to stick to the old ways only. I’m part of the Anirudh Varma Collective, dabble in fusion sitar collaboration with piano or drums, and sometimes work with singers like Rekha Bharadwaj for spiritual or Bollywood gigs. Even theatre - I did the Monsoon Wedding musical once!
The Raaga Vibe
Each raaga has its own mood, tied to the time of day. I select raagas based on your event’s timing and what you want the vibe to be. That’s the beauty of raaga-based live music - it always matches the moment.

My Story
Namaskar, I’m Soumitra Thakur. Sitar is in my blood, Delhi is my base, Jharkhand gave me roots. Got the President Award once, still feels unreal. Music isn’t just work for me - it’s how I breathe, how I see the world. Tried Saraswati Veena, got hooked by its naad (sound). My friends, old teachers, even random heroes I meet, they keep me grounded. Life’s tough, but I believe in small steps and never giving up.
