Sitar Renditions: Classical, Film, and Devotional Music

My foundation is in the deep, meditative sounds of the Rampur Senia Gharana, but I also enjoy stepping outside those boundaries. Here is my Sitar, finding new life in Rabindra Sangeet, Carnatic compositions, and familiar film melodies.

It’s a shame that as an Indian Classical musician, I know so little about Carnatic music. This is my little experiment playing a famous Carnatic composition, 'Maha Ganapathim', on the sitar.

I had to get this out of my system. This tune 'Jamal Kudu' from the movie Animal is so annoyingly addictive. Here is my little experiment, mixing it with Raag Bhimpalsi.

"Gaaiteo parina, na geyeo thakte parina" (I can't sing, but I can't stay without singing either). A humble attempt at a Rabindra Sangeet for Rabindra Jayanti.

A little fun after a day's riyaz. This is an all-time favorite old Hindi song of mine. Can you guess the song and the movie?

My rendition of a patriotic song for Republic Day. Listening to this song gave me my first pangs of patriotism as a child. This is all recorded, edited, and mixed by me.

A performance of Vande Mataram with my students. We may not have gotten the tune 100% correct, but we surely got the spirit right. Jai Hind!

About this collection

When I arrange a piece like 'Jamal Kudu' or a Carnatic classic for the Sitar, I do not change the instrument's fundamental character. I try to weave the familiar melody into a Raga framework—often using scales like Bhimpalasi to match the mood—so you get a tune you recognize, played with the sustain and depth that only a traditional Sitar can provide.

While my daily riyaz is dedicated to the traditional Alaap and Dhrupad baaj of the Rampur Senia Gharana, I find great joy in applying these techniques to other musical forms. My Sitar renditions are experiments that let me connect with a wider audience.

Why I Explore

Music should not be locked in a box. When I play Rabindra Sangeet or a patriotic song, I am essentially trying to translate the vocal emotions onto the strings. For Carnatic compositions like 'Maha Ganapathim', I study the specific talas and phrasing to ensure the essence remains intact, even when adapted for an instrument that naturally leans towards Hindustani Classical improvisation.

What You Will Hear

In this collection, you will find:

  • Instrumental Covers: From viral film tracks to classic Bollywood melodies that I enjoy playing after a long session.
  • Devotional & Folk: My interpretations of Rabindra Sangeet and patriotic anthems that hold a special place in my heart.
  • Crossover Experiments: Attempts to bridge the gap between Carnatic and Hindustani classical structures.

Whether you are looking for background music for a gathering or a unique performance for a private event, these pieces demonstrate how versatile the Sitar can be. I am always happy to curate a setlist that mixes these light, familiar tunes with serious classical music to suit the energy of your venue.
