Soulful Renditions: Ghazals & Bollywood Classics on Sitar
I believe some melodies are eternal. This collection features my instrumental and vocal interpretations of classic ghazals and timeless Bollywood songs, reimagined through the resonant strings of my sitar.
This is my sitar rendition of the timeless ghazal, ‘Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo’. The moody lighting and intimate setting of this studio performance capture the deep emotion I strive to convey in every note. It’s a song that speaks directly to the soul.
A spontaneous jugalbandi of Raag Shudh Kalyan with my brother, Khurram Ali Niazi, on tabla. This informal session at home shows the natural chemistry and musical dialogue that is at the heart of our collaborations.
A sitar cover of the classic Bollywood song 'Piya Tose Naina Lage Re'. Some melodies are eternal, and it's a joy to give them a new voice through my instrument.
A vocal cover of 'Neend Na Aaye' by Fuzon. This song is pure nostalgia, taking me back to radio nights and mixed CDs. Sometimes, a song is not just heard, it is felt.
My take on the beautiful ghazal 'Niyyat-e-Shauq', famously sung by Madam Noor Jehan. It's a melody that speaks of longing and love, and I hope I've done justice to its evergreen beauty.
A sitar cover of the ghazal 'Mujhe Tum Nazar Se' by the great Ustad Mehdi Hassan Sahab. His voice is legendary, and this is my humble tribute to his masterpiece.
Playing the evergreen romantic song 'Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar'. Some songs are so perfect that you can't cut a single phrase, and this is one of them.
My sitar version of 'Do Pal' from the movie Veer-Zara. This melody by the late Madan Mohan Ji beautifully captures the bittersweet feeling of fleeting moments.
Our version of 'Sakal Ban' from Heeramandi, an original bandish by Hazrat Amir Khusrau. It was a pleasure to collaborate with Ishaan Ghosh on this soulful track.
A vocal attempt at 'Yaad' by Sonu Nigam ji. His voice is an inspiration, and I wanted to try singing this beautiful melody that feels like a refreshing winter breeze.
About Soulful Renditions: Ghazals & Film Classics
When I reinterpret these classics, I don't just focus on the melody; I explore the specific 'prahar' or time-based mood that fits the song's emotion, often transposing the arrangement to suit the deep, acoustic resonance of my Rikhi Ram sitar. If you are planning an event, these pieces work beautifully for intimate cocktail evenings or as a warm, nostalgic addition to your reception, allowing guests to connect with songs they already know and love.
There is a unique joy in taking a melody that everyone knows and introducing it through the strings of a sitar. For me, playing tracks like 'Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo' or 'Piya Tose Naina Lage Re' is about preserving the soul of the original composition while letting my instrument bring a new texture to the music.
My Approach to Reimagining Classics
Whether I am in my studio or on a stage, my process remains rooted in the Hindustani classical tradition. I analyze the composition—be it a ghazal by Mehdi Hassan Sahab or a Bollywood number by Madan Mohan Ji—and look for the ragas that underpin the melody. By infusing these with subtle improvisations, I turn a simple cover into a dialogue between the past and the present.
What You Can Expect
My performances for private and corporate events aren't just background noise; they are interactive, emotive experiences.
- Intimate Sets: Perfect for home gatherings or small soirées where you want a sophisticated, acoustic vibe.
- Versatile Instrumentation: While I often perform solo, I love collaborating. For larger events, I can bring in a tabla player for a jugalbandi, or expand to a full ensemble with keys and flute to give these classics a fusion edge.
- Audience Engagement: I enjoy sharing the stories behind the songs, giving you a glimpse into why a particular composition speaks to me.
If you have a specific song that holds meaning for you or your family, let me know. I am always happy to explore requests that align with my style of music, ensuring your event feels personal, authentic, and truly your own.
