About this collection
The real challenge in this medium is knowing when to stop. In my sessions, we focus on the rhythm of the pen and the timing of the watercolor wash, ensuring you do not overwork the paper. You will learn to control the ink flow for structure and let the colors do the storytelling, turning an ordinary city market or landscape into a lively narrative.
Pen, ink, and wash is all about layering. We start with the skeletal structure—the pen lines. Unlike pure watercolor where you paint shapes, here you draw objects. I teach you how to use cross-hatching and contour lines to create depth before the brush even touches the paper. Once the drawing is set, the watercolor wash acts as the soul of the piece.
I see students struggle with mud-colored washes or messy ink. In our classes, we fix this by understanding water ratios and pigment transparency. Whether we are sketching a busy market scene or a quiet temple, the goal is clarity. We do not just copy reference photos. We sketch live to understand perspective, which is why my workshops are mostly 'plein air' or based on live demonstrations.
A note on your portfolio: please, do not copy someone else’s art to show skill. If you are learning, trace your own path. My classes are designed to help you find your own voice, not imitate a style. You will learn the basics, build your composition, and eventually, make art that feels like yours.
